Multipolar quantum optics deals with the interaction of light with matter as a many-body bound system of charged particles where the coupling to electromagnetic fields is in terms of the multipolar electric polarization and magnetization. We describe two transformations applied to the conventional non-relativistic formalism, namely a gauge transformation applied directly to the fields at the Lagrangian stage and a unitary transformation applied to the old Hamiltonian. We show how such transformations lead to the same Power-Zienau-Woolley (PZW) formulation of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) of an overall electrically neutral many-body bound system of charges, including the internal motion as well as the gross dynamics of the centre of mass. Besides highlighting the utility of the multipolar formalism as a reliable and convenient platform in dealing with optical processes in atomic and molecular physics, it is shown how the analysis can also lead to the identification of the Röntgen effect arising from the gross motion of an electric dipole moment in a magnetic field and the Aharonov-Casher effect due to the motion of a magnetic dipole moment in an electric field. The importance of the two effects is pointed out in both experimental and theoretical contexts. This article is part of the theme issue 'The quantum theory of light'.

Electrically switchable second harmonic generation (SHG) is highly valuable in electro-optic modulators, which can be deployed in data communication and quantum optics. Coupling circular dichroism (CD) with an electrically controlled SHG process is advantageous because it enhances the signal transmission bandwidth and security while enabling multiple modulation modes for optical logic. However, ferroelectrically switchable chiral second-order nonlinearity is rarely reported.

A computationally efficient quasi-harmonic study of ice polymorphs using the FFLUX force field.

Acta Crystallogr A Found Adv

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, United Kingdom.

FFLUX is a multipolar machine-learned force field that uses Gaussian process regression models trained on data from quantum chemical topology calculations. It offers an efficient way of predicting both lattice and free energies of polymorphs, allowing their stability to be assessed at finite temperatures. Here the Ih, II and XV phases of ice are studied, building on previous work on formamide crystals and liquid water.

Advances in nonlinear metasurfaces for imaging, quantum, and sensing applications.

Nanophotonics

November 2023

Department of Engineering, Advanced Optics and Photonics Laboratory, School of Science Technology, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, UK.

Metasurfaces, composed of artificial meta-atoms of subwavelength size, can support strong light-matter interaction based on multipolar resonances and plasmonics, hence offering the great capability of empowering nonlinear generation. Recently, owing to their ability to manipulate the amplitude and phase of the nonlinear emission in the subwavelength scale, metasurfaces have been recognized as ultra-compact, flat optical components for a vast range of applications, including nonlinear imaging, quantum light sources, and ultrasensitive sensing. This review focuses on the recent progress on nonlinear metasurfaces for those applications.

Investigating the properties of fatty acid-based ionic liquids: advancement in AMOEBA force field.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The University of Texas at Dallas, 800 West Campbell Road, Richardson, Texas 75080, USA.

Developing the multipolar-polarizable AMOEBA force field for large molecules presents its own set of complexities. However, by segmenting the molecules into smaller fragments and ensuring that each fragment is transferable to other systems, the process of parameterizing large molecules such as fatty acids can be simplified without compromising accuracy. In this study, we present a fragment-based AMOEBA FF development for long-chain fatty acid ionic liquids (LCFA-ILs).
