The eco-friendly treatment of cyanide tailings (CT) using microorganisms is a cost-effective and promising technology. However, this process often generates the secondary pollutants, such as ammonia nitrogen (NH-N), which can adversely impacts the surrounding environment. The accumulation of NH-N is also toxic to cyanide-degrading microorganisms, presenting a significant challenge in achieving simultaneous cyanide degradation and NH₄⁺-N mitigation. In this study, a group of functional bacteria CG305-1 with the ability to degrade cyanide and perform nitrification and denitrification was successfully enriched for the first time and used to treat CT by in situ microbial drenching technology. Results demonstrated that the total cyanide (CN) concentration in the leaching solution decreased from 49.96 ± 1.51 mg/L to 0.19 ± 1.11 mg/L. NH₄⁺-N was degraded to 0.25 ± 0.18 mg/L, and nitrate nitrogen (NO-N) was reduced to 0.41 ± 0.20 mg/L. Furthermore, CN in the CT leachate was reduced to 0.94 ± 0.11 mg/L, meeting the storage standard for CT leachate (CN < 5 mg/L). The potential synergistic microbial degradation mechanisms were elucidated through Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Metagenomic sequencing. This study provides significant insights into green and sustainable methods for the harmless treatment of CT.

[Global surgery-Challenges in the treatment of children with cleft lip and palate].

Chirurgie (Heidelb)

January 2025

Klinik für Mund‑, Kiefer- und Plastische Gesichtschirurgie, Zentrum für Zentrum für Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumenspalten und seltene oro-kranio-faziale Fehlbildungen, Universitätsmedizin Frankfurt, Theodor-Stern-Kai 7, 60590, Frankfurt am Main, Deutschland.

Background: Cleft lip and palate is the most frequent malformation in humans that requires surgical correction but is not primarily life-threatening. That is why in many economically not very well developed countries, special surgical care, such as for cleft lip and palate, is not guaranteed at all or is not sufficiently guaranteed, so that numerous aid organizations have been founded for over 50 years to provide help by organizing surgical aid missions. Even if this help seems primarily ethically harmless and very laudable, the lack of rules and instructions unfortunately regularly leads to the fact that legal, ethical and even medical treatment standards are often not observed to the detriment of the affected children.

Introduction BioGlue® (CryoLife, Inc, Kennesaw, GA), despite being claimed to be a safe and harmless sealant, reportedly has several adverse effects including surgical wound dehiscence. This study aimed to examine the factors that may contribute to this unfavorable outcome in cranial surgery. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted on patients who underwent brain surgery with the use of BioGlue® between January 2015 and December 2022.

Imidacloprid (IMI), as an emerging pollutant, is frequently detected in pesticide wastewater. Cobalt-based single-atom catalysts (Co-SACs) doped with sulfur atoms can serve as an efficient strategy to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degrade organic pollutants. The paper employed density functional theory and computational toxicology to deeply explore the mechanism and ecotoxicity of IMI when S atoms were introduced into Co-SACs for PMS activation.

Dinotefuran (DIN) is toxic to non-target organisms and accelerates the evolution of antibiotic resistance, which poses a problem for the stable operation of the activated sludge process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, the emergence and the transfer mechanism of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in activated sludge systems under DIN stress remains unclear. Thus, in the study, the potential impact of DIN on ARGs and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was investigated in depth using metagenomic binning and functional modules.
