Citrus bacterial canker has deleterious effects on global citrus production. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascade regulates plant defense against pathogen infection. Here, we identified 11 MAPKs in Atalantia buxifolia, a wild citrus species with high stress tolerance. Phylogenetic and gene structure analysis of the identified MAP kinases (MPKs) was conducted, and conserved motifs were identified. MPK expression was altered in Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc)-resistant Atalantia buxifolia and Xcc-sensitive sweet orange after Xcc infection. AbMPK13 expression was significantly up-regulated after Xcc infection. AbMPK13 was localized to the cytoplasm, and its overexpression enhanced the resistance of sweet orange to Xcc and activated the salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathway. These findings clarify the role of MPKs in the citrus canker resistance of A. buxifolia.

The genus contains a vast range of antioxidant metabolites, dietary metabolites, and antioxidant polyphenols that protect plants from unfavorable environmental conditions, enhance their tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and possess multiple health-promoting effects in humans. This review summarizes various antioxidant metabolites such as organic acids, amino acids, alkaloids, fatty acids, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, tocopherols, terpenoids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins that are distributed in different citrus species. Among these antioxidant metabolites, flavonoids are abundantly present in primitive, wild, and cultivated citrus species and possess the highest antioxidant activity.

Cuticular wax covers the surface of fleshy fruit and plays a protective role in fruit development and postharvest storage, including reducing fruit water loss, resisting biotic and abiotic stress and affecting fruit glossiness. The β-ketoacyl-CoA synthase (KCS) is the rate-limiting enzyme of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) synthesis, which provides precursors for the synthesis of cuticular wax. In this study, a total of 96 KCS genes were identified in six Citrinae species, including 13, 16, 21, 14, 16 and 16 KCS genes in the primitive species (Atalantia buxifolia), the wild species (Citrus ichangensis), and four cultivated species (Citrus medica, Citrus grandis, Citrus sinensis and Citrus clementina), respectively.

The present study was carried out to estimate the effects of solvents (petroleum ether and hexane: ethyl acetate) used in liquid-liquid extraction to total terpenoid content (TTC) and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts obtained from bark. The results showed that solvent fractionation increased the TTC compared with crude extracts.
