Advances in telemedicine, exemplified by augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), are rapidly progressing. For instance, AR available over long distances has already been successfully utilized in crisis intervention, such as in war zones. The potential of telemedicine also appears promising in structurally weak areas or in the involvement of experts in emergency situations.

Optimal trocar placement during VATS ensures comprehensive access to the thoracic cavity, provides a panoramic endoscopic view, and prevents instrument crowding. While established principles such as the Baseball Diamond Principle (BDP) and Triangle Target Principle (TTP) exist, surgeons mainly rely on experience and patient-specific anatomy for trocar placement, potentially leading to sub-optimal surgical plans that increase operative time and fatigue.

The former could be used for skill assessment, while the latter is necessary for the projection of virtual overlays. Where instrument and anatomy tracking have often been considered two separate problems, in this article, a method is proposed for joint tracking of all structures simultaneously.

Diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesion (PPL) is the most challenging field in bronchoscopy and interventional pulmonology, which concerns early lung cancer diagnosis. Despite novel techniques and new approaches to the periphery of the lung, almost 25% of PPLs remain undiagnosed. Bronchoscopy with guide systems, virtual and/or electromagnetic navigation, robotic bronchoscopy, and transparenchymal nodule approaches tend to provide a higher percentage of reaching the lesion, but the diagnostic yield rarely exceeds 75%, regardless of the instruments used.
