Switzerland has been considered free of terrestrial rabies for more than 20 years. Nevertheless, the topics of rabies and rabies vaccination are more relevant than ever. On the one hand, this is because the demand for vaccines is increasing due to the increasing mobility of humans and animals, and on the other hand, there are frequent vaccine supply shortages. Our article highlights the key points in the face of growing challenges.

Unlabelled: Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly pathogenic paramyxovirus causing frequently lethal encephalitis in humans. The NiV genome is encapsidated by the nucleocapsid (N) protein. RNA synthesis is mediated by the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP), consisting of the polymerase (L) protein complexed with the homo-tetrameric phosphoprotein (P).

Background: The Philippines is ranked among the top countries with 200-300 annual deaths due to rabies. Most human rabies cases have been reported in remote areas, where dog surveillance is inadequate. Therefore, a strategy to effectively improve surveillance in remote areas will increase the number of detections.

Introduction: Zoonoses represent 75% of emerging diseases. These diseases pose a permanent threat to human health and well-being and have the potential to become increasingly frequent due to habitat degradation; land-use changes; and increased global mobility of humans, animals, and animal products. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact ten zoonoses (brucellosis, cysticercosis, echinococcosis, leishmaniasis, leptospirosis, Lyme disease, rabies, toxoplasmosis, trichinellosis, and West Nile fever) had on human hospitalizations between 2002 and 2016 in Portuguese National Health Service hospitals.

Purpose Of Review: Rabies is an ancient yet still neglected tropical disease (NTD). This review focuses upon highlights of recent research and peer-reviewed communications on the underestimated tropical burden of disease and its management due to the complicated dynamics of virulent viral species, diverse mammalian reservoirs, and tens of millions of exposed humans and animals - and how laboratory-based surveillance at each level informs upon pathogen spread and risks of transmission, for targeted prevention and control.
Recent Findings: While both human and rabies animal cases in enzootic areas over the past 5 years were reported to PAHO/WHO and OIE by member countries, still there is a huge gap between these "official" data and the need for enhanced surveillance efforts to meet global program goals.
