AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

With their net carbon accumulation determined by the balance between gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) and carbon losses (from processes such as oxidation and decomposition), peatlands can function as either carbon sinks or carbon sources. Healthy, pristine peatlands are vital carbon sinks, while degraded peatlands can release significant amounts of carbon (C) into the atmosphere. This study investigates the use of peat vertical displacement (VD), detectable via remote sensing, as a proxy for net carbon accumulation in northern boreal and temperate peatlands. Various environmental factors, including peat body and vegetation types, climate conditions, and land use changes, were analyzed to assess their influence on carbon dynamics. Strong positive correlations between air temperature (TMP) and VD suggest that TMP is a key driver of VD, likely due to increased GEP. Conversely, negative correlations with precipitation (PCP) indicate that increased water input generally reduces VD. Unexpected inverse relationships between PCP and VD are likely driven by peat accumulation's complex hydrological and temporal dynamics. The land use analysis revealed that drained agricultural regions experience significantly higher subsidence rates than well-preserved peatlands, with drainage accelerating peatland degradation by up to 66.7 %. These findings highlight the critical role of land use change in peatland degradation, while also revealing that degradation is occurring even in well-preserved areas-suggesting that peatland health is a global challenge. The average VD was negative in all regions studied, ranging from -0.9 cm/year in Rospuda to -1.5 cm/year in Wizna, indicating ongoing degradation. This pattern suggests that regional factors, likely linked to climate change, are affecting the stability of peatlands in northeastern Poland. This alarming trend highlights the limitations of restoration efforts in fully restoring peat-forming processes and achieving a stable ecological state. These conclusions should be considered when planning peatland conservation strategies, as climate change may significantly limit the effectiveness of restoration efforts.

Diversity and Distribution of Methane Functional Microorganisms in Sedimentary Columns of Hongfeng Reservoir in Different Seasons.

Curr Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai University, 150#, 99 Shangda Road, Shanghai, 200444, China.

Freshwater ecosystem is a significant natural source of CH emission in the atmosphere. To fully understand the dynamics of methane emissions in reservoirs, it is essential to grasp the temporal and vertical distribution patterns, as well as the factors that influence the methanogenic bacterial communities within the sediments. This study investigates the methane dynamics, carbon isotope fractionation (δCH), and abundance of functional microorganisms along the geochemical gradient in the in situ sedimentary column of Hongfeng Reservoir (China).

Background: Carbon-ion radiotherapy provides steep dose gradients that allow the simultaneous application of high tumor doses as well as the sparing of healthy tissue and radio-sensitive organs. However, even small anatomical changes may have a severe impact on the dose distribution because of the finite range of ion beams.

Purpose: An in-vivo monitoring method based on secondary-ion emission could potentially provide feedback about the patient anatomy and thus the treatment quality.

Renal Clearable Chiral Manganese Oxide Supraparticles for In Vivo Detection of Metalloproteinase-9 in Early Cancer Diagnosis.

Adv Mater

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology, International Joint Research Laboratory for Biointerface and Biodetection, School of Food Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, Jiangsu, 214122, China.

In this study, polypeptide TGGGPLGVARGKGGC-induced chiral manganese dioxide supraparticles (MnO SPs) are prepared for sensitive quantification of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in vitro and in vivo. The results show that L-type manganese dioxide supraparticles (L-MnO SPs) exhibited twice the affinity for the cancer cell membrane receptor CD47 (cluster of differentiation, integrin-associated protein) than D-type manganese dioxide supraparticles (D-MnO SPs) to accumulate at the tumor site after surface modification of the internalizing arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (iRGD) ligand, specifically reacting with the MMP-9, disassembling into ultrasmall nanoparticles (NPs), and efficiently underwent renal clearance. Furthermore, L-MnO facilitates the quantification of MMP-9 in mouse tumor xenografts, as demonstrated by circular dichroism (CD) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within 2 h.
