Centralising a loss of consciousness to the central medial thalamus.

Although a role of the thalamus in different arousal and awareness states is well established, there is a surprising lack of knowledge on subregional specificity within this complex, multinucleated structure of the diencephalon. In their recent paper 'Extrasynaptic GABA-A receptors in central medial thalamus mediate anaesthesia in rats', Muheyati et al. evaluated whether GABA receptors expressed in the central medial (CM), paraventricular (PV) or lateral mediodorsal (MD) nuclei of the thalamus contribute to the loss of the righting reflex (LORR) in rats. Deficits in this reflex have previously been interpreted as a surrogate marker of altered levels of consciousness. Using a range of convergent techniques, the authors report the novel finding that delta subunit-expressing GABA receptors in the CM contribute to distinct awareness states. This important discovery implicates a tonic GABA-mediated conductance in the CM that may be relevant for minimally conscious states and other conditions of altered awareness.

Background: The primary aim of this study was to quantitatively analysis the acetabular morphological feature and 2D/3D coverage of the Crowe IV DDH hip, dividing into subgroups by the false acetabulum. The secondary aim was to propose a 3D bone mapping to determine acetabular bone defect analysis from the perspective of the implanted simulation.

Methods: A total of 53 Crowe IV hips (27 hips without the false acetabulum in IVa group and 26 hips in IVb group) and 40 normal hips met the inclusion criteria and were retrospectively evaluated.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are reported to have disrupted autobiographical memory (AM). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging we investigated behavioral and neural processing of the recall of emotional (sad and happy) memories in 30 MDD, 18 BPD, and 34 healthy control (HC) unmedicated women. The behavioral results showed that the MDD group experienced more sadness than the HC after the sad recall, while BPD participants experienced less happiness than HC after the happy recall.

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is expressed in the oropharyngeal epithelium, including the frontonasal ectodermal zone (FEZ), which is defined as the boundary between Shh and Fgf8 expression domains in the frontonasal epithelium. To investigate the role of SHH signaling from the oropharyngeal epithelium, we generated mice in which Shh expression is specifically deleted in the oropharyngeal epithelium (Isl1-Cre; Shh). In the mutant mouse, Shh expression was excised in the oropharyngeal epithelium as well as FEZ and ventral forebrain, consistent with the expression pattern of Isl1.
