Superhydrophobic paper-based functional materials have emerged as a sustainable solution with a wide range of applications due to their unique water-repelling properties. Inspired by natural examples like the lotus leaf, these materials combine low surface energy with micro/nanostructures to create air pockets that maintain a high contact angle. This review provides an in-depth analysis of recent advancements in the development of superhydrophobic paper-based materials, focusing on methodologies for modification, underlying mechanisms, and performance in various applications.

A Graphene/MXene-Modified Flexible Fabric for Infrared Camouflage, Electrothermal, and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Shandong Key Laboratory of Medical and Health Textile Materials, Qingdao University, Qingdao 266071, China.

Although materials with infrared camouflage capabilities are increasingly being produced, few applications exist in clothing fabrics. Here, graphene/MXene-modified fabric with superior infrared camouflage, Joule heating, and electromagnetic shielding capabilities all in one was prepared by simply scraping a graphene slurry onto alkali-treated cotton fabrics, followed by spraying MXene. The functionality of the modified fabrics after different treatment times was then tested and analyzed.

Large-Area Clay Composite Membranes with Enhanced Permeability for Efficient Dye/Salt Separation.

Membranes (Basel)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Ocean Energy Utilization and Energy Conservation of Ministry of Education, School of Energy & Power Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China.

The escalating discharge of textile wastewater with plenty of dye and salt has resulted in serious environmental risks. Membranes assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with many tunable interlayer spacings are promising materials for dye/salt separation. However, the narrow layer spacing and tortuous interlayer transport channels of 2D-material-based membranes limit the processing capacity and the permeability of small salt ions for efficient dye/salt separation.

Recognizing human body motions opens possibilities for real-time observation of users' daily activities, revolutionizing continuous human healthcare and rehabilitation. While some wearable sensors show their capabilities in detecting movements, no prior work could detect full-body motions with wireless devices. Here, we introduce a soft electronic textile-integrated system, including nanomaterials and flexible sensors, which enables real-time detection of various full-body movements using the combination of a wireless sensor suit and deep-learning-based cloud computing.

Triple circularly polarized luminescence of phenylalanine-based supramolecular gels regulated by kinetic and thermodynamic assembly pathways.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Bio-fibers and Eco-textiles, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Key Laboratory of Shandong Provincial Universities for Advanced Fibers and Composites, Qingdao University, Qingdao, 266071, P. R. China.

A single phenylalanine-based gelator can self-assemble into various chiral nanostructures with triple circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Its supramolecular assembly and CPL emission are found to be dependent on the kinetic and thermodynamic pathways. This work provides new insight into the regulation of CPL-active functional materials.
