Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT) is an extremely popular, in-principle exact method, which can describe any many-electron system by introducing an auxiliary system of noninteracting electrons with the same density. When the number of electrons, , changes continuously, taking on both integer and fractional values, the density has to be piecewise-linear, with respect to . In this article, I explore how the piecewise-linearity property of the exact interacting density is reflected in the KS system. In particular, I suggest to express KS quantities using the two-point Taylor expansion in and find how the expansion coefficients are restricted by the piecewise-linearity requirement. Focus is given to the total electron density, the KS subdensities, and the highest occupied (HOMO) orbital density. In addition to exact analytical results, common approximations for the HOMO, namely, the frozen and the linear regimes, are analyzed. A numerical investigation using various exchange-correlation approximations is performed to test the analytical findings. The outcomes of this work will help to remove density-driven errors in DFT calculations for open systems and ensembles.

We show that the exact universal density functional of integer electronic charge leads to an extension to fractional charge in an asymptotic sense when it is applied to a system made of asymptotically separated densities. The extended functional is asymptotically local and is said to be i-local. The concept of i-locality is also applicable to nuclear external potentials, and a natural association exists between the localities of a density and a set of nuclei.

Percolation models of pathogen spillover.

Predicting pathogen spillover requires counting spillover events and aligning such counts with process-related covariates for each spillover event. How can we connect our analysis of spillover counts to simple, mechanistic models of pathogens jumping from reservoir hosts to recipient hosts? We illustrate how the pathways to pathogen spillover can be represented as a directed graph connecting reservoir hosts and recipient hosts and the number of spillover events modelled as a percolation of infectious units along that graph. Percolation models of pathogen spillover formalize popular intuition and management concepts for pathogen spillover, such as the inextricably multilevel nature of cross-species transmission, the impact of covariance between processes such as pathogen shedding and human susceptibility on spillover risk, and the assumptions under which the effect of a management intervention targeting one process, such as persistence of vectors, will translate to an equal effect on the overall spillover risk.

Global and local curvature in density functional theory.

J Chem Phys

Piecewise linearity of the energy with respect to fractional electron removal or addition is a requirement of an electronic structure method that necessitates the presence of a derivative discontinuity at integer electron occupation. Semi-local exchange-correlation (xc) approximations within density functional theory (DFT) fail to reproduce this behavior, giving rise to deviations from linearity with a convex global curvature that is evidence of many-electron, self-interaction error and electron delocalization. Popular functional tuning strategies focus on reproducing piecewise linearity, especially to improve predictions of optical properties.

The determination of spectral properties from first principles can provide powerful connections between microscopic theoretical predictions and experimental data, but requires complex electronic-structure formulations that fall outside the domain of applicability of common approaches, such as density-functional theory. We show here that Koopmans-compliant functionals, constructed to enforce piecewise linearity and the correct discontinuity derivative in energy functionals with respect to fractional occupation-i.e.
