Background: Rodent-borne orthohantaviruses are the causative agents of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Apart from the classic rodent-borne hantaviruses, numerous species of hantaviruses have been identified in shrews and bats; however, their antigenicity and pathogenicity are unknown. This study focused on developing a serological method to detect antibodies against bat- and shrew-borne hantaviruses.

Article Synopsis
  • Leptospirosis, a re-emerging disease affecting both humans and dogs, was diagnosed in a study of 210 suspected dogs using MAT and PCR tests.
  • The study found that 58.57% of the dogs had anti-leptospiral antibodies, with 23.33% confirmed as acutely infected, primarily influenced by factors like age, seasonal weather, outdoor exposure, and contact with rodents or wet environments.
  • The identification of Leptospira interrogans in infected dogs highlights the importance of recognizing these risk factors for timely treatment and recovery strategies in canines.

Laboratório de Zoonoses Bacterianas, Departamento de Medicina Veteriária Preventiva e Saúde Animal, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de Sâo Paulo, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Bats play a crucial role in the ecosystem, yet concerns have arisen regarding their potential as carriers of zoonotic bacteria, including Leptospira spp. Due to the lack of knowledge about the carrier state of bats in Brazil, this study aimed to evaluate the presence of antibodies against Leptospira spp. and its DNA in bats from four Brazilian States (São Paulo, Paraíba, Pernambuco, and Ceará).

Plasmodium falciparum infection threatens military populations deployed to highly malaria-endemic regions, such as Peruvian Army peacekeepers deployed to Central African Republic. During deployment, malaria cases were identified by microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests. After deployment, we performed malaria diagnosis by malachite green loop-mediated isothermal amplification and photo-induced electron transfer PCR assays.
