Autotrophic microbial electrosynthesis (MES) processes are mainly based on organisms that rely on carbon dioxide (CO) as an electron acceptor and typically have low biomass yields. However, there are few data on the process and efficiencies of oxic MES (OMES). In this study, we used the knallgas bacterium Kyrpidia spormannii to investigate biomass formation and energy efficiency of cathode-dependent growth. The study revealed that the process can be carried out with the same electron efficiency as conventional gas fermentation, but overcomes disadvantages, such as the use of explosive gas mixtures. When accounting only for the electron input via electrical energy, a solar energy demand of 67.89 kWh kg dry biomass was determined. While anaerobic MES is ideally suited to produce methane, short-chain alcohols, and carboxylic acids, its aerobic counterpart could extend this important range of applications to not only protein for use in the food and feed sector, but also further complex products.

In semiconductor catalysts, rational doping of nonmetallic elements holds significant scientific and technological importance for enhancing photocatalytic performance. Here, using a one-step hydrothermal technique, we synthesized iodine-doped BiOCl composite and evaluated the impact of iodine doping on its photocatalytic capability for organic dye degradation under visible light irradiation. In this study, we demonstrate that the introduction of iodide ions not only provides an ideal built-in electric field (BIEF) for BiOCl but also induces the generation of additional oxygen vacancies (OVs).

Piezoelectric catalytic production of HO is a novel and environmentally friendly HO production method, and many piezoelectric catalysts are currently being developed. However, all of them have the disadvantages of precious metals as cocatalysts and low catalytic efficiency. Herein, CaTiO was successfully prepared and loaded with the nonprecious metal CoP (CoP/CaTiO) for piezoelectric catalytic production of HO.

Doped semiconductors are often used to improve photocatalytic efficiency and address the challenges of easy recombination of electron-hole pairs and poor photoluminescence. However, the reproducibility and complexity of experimental studies result in time-consuming and less cost-effective studies, and it is difficult to gain insights into the intrinsic properties of doped photocatalysts to control their performance. Introducing a machine learning approach, we constructed a photocatalytic model of transition-metal- and rare earth metal-ion-doped γ-BiMoO.

The treatment of effluents from the pharmaceutical industry currently remains a major challenge due to their impact on the environment and public health along with the cost of treatments. Considering these issues, our work focused on the development of materials with effective adsorption properties to treat industrial effluents based on locally available and inexpensive clays and zeolite. Local Algerian kaolin (Djebel Debbagh), palygorskite (Ghoufi) and zeolite (Tinbdar) were treated thermally and chemically prior to synthesis into mesoporous materials of hexagonal structure using pluronic P123 as surfactant.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a highly heterogeneous disease with varying remyelination potential across individuals and between lesions. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the potential to remyelinate remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to take advantage of the intrinsic heterogeneity in remyelinating capacity between MS donors and lesions to uncover known and novel pro-remyelinating molecules for MS therapies.
