Connecting socially relevant topics with biological content can boost student engagement and comprehension. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an increasingly prevalent diagnosis with a number of intersecting topic areas between developmental biology and social justice. Here I describe two exercises that I developed to engage students in learning opportunities that link scientific process learning goals with real-world applications.

The ecological risk of microplastics (MPs) is raising concern about their transport and fate in aquatic ecosystems. The capture of MPs by bubbles is a ubiquitous natural phenomenon in water-based environment, which plays a critical role in the global cycling of MPs, thereby increasing their environmental threats. However, the nanoscale interaction mechanisms between bubbles and MPs underlying MPs transport by bubbles in complex environmental systems remain elusive.

In recent years, bioinspired insect flight has become a prominent research area, with a particular focus on beetle-inspired aerial vehicles. Studying the unique flight mechanisms and structural characteristics of beetles has significant implications for the optimization of biomimetic flying devices. Among beetles, (rhinoceros beetle) exhibits a distinct wing deployment-flight-retraction sequence, whereby the interaction between the hindwings and protective elytra contributes to lift generation and maintenance.
