A systematic experimental optimization procedure was developed for the synthesis of cerium-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (CeTNPs) based on modified sol-gel process. The nanocomposite was prepared using titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) as a catalyst precursor, while utilizing the non-ionic surfactant Triton X-114 in cyclohexane as a stabilizing agent. The synthesis process was optimized by identifying the main experimental factors that affect the properties of the nanoparticles, primarily the structural phase and particle size. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for phase and size, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) for morphology, particle size analyzer (PSA) for size distribution, and Brunaur, Emmett, and Teller (BET) for surface area and pores characteristics. The photocatalytic activity of the optimized sample was tested for the removal of methyl orange (MO) and lead (II) from aqueous solutions, and the results indicate superior performance as the catalyst uptakes were 14.8 mg/l and 11.4 mg/l for methyl orange and lead (II), respectively. The main highlights of the proposed procedure are as follows:•Identification of the key variables impacting the structural and morphological properties.•Establishing the levels of each factor based on experimental findings.•Generation of all possible combinations of factors based on ANOVA, then characterization of the synthesized material from every possible combination.

Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) untargeted experiments require complex bioinformatic strategies to extract information from the experimental data. Here we discuss the "data preprocessing," the set of procedures performed on the raw data to produce a data matrix which will be the starting point for the subsequent statistical analysis. Data preprocessing is a crucial step on the path to knowledge extraction, which should be carefully controlled and optimized in order to maximize the output of any untargeted metabolomics investigation.

Compared to fluorescence, second harmonic generation (SHG) has recently emerged as an excellent signal for imaging probes due to its unmatched advantages in terms of no photobleaching, no phototoxicity, no signal saturation, as well as the superior imaging accuracy with excellent avoidance of background noise. Existing SHG probes are constructed from heavy metals and are cellular exogenous, presenting with high cytotoxicity, difficult cellular uptake, and the limitation of non-heritability. We, therefore, initially propose an innovative gene-encoded bioprotein SHG probe derived from Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) polyhedrin.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a severe autoimmune disorder that wreaks havoc on the central nervous system, leading to a spectrum of motor and cognitive impairments. There is no cure, and current treatment strategies rely on broad immunosuppression, leaving patients vulnerable to infections. To address this problem, our approach aims to induce antigen-specific tolerance, a much-needed shift in MS therapy.

Li-ion capacitors (LICs) integrate the desirable features of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors (SCs), but the kinetic imbalance between the both electrodes leads to inferior electrochemical performance. Thus, constructing an advanced anode with outstanding rate capability and terrific redox kinetics is crucial to LICs. Herein, heterostructured ZnS/SnS2 nanosheets encapsulated into N-doped carbon microcubes (ZnS/SnS2@NC) are successfully fabricated.

Ab initio calculations of electric field gradients (EFGs) in molecular crystals have advanced significantly due to the gauge including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) formalism, which accounts for the infinite periodicity in crystals. However, theoretical accuracies still lag behind experimental ones, making it challenging to distinguish experimentally distinguishable similar structures, a deficiency largely attributed to the limitation of GIPAW codes to generalized gradient approximation (GGA) density functional theory (DFT) functionals. In this study, we investigate whether hybrid DFT functionals can enhance the EFG calculation accuracy and the associated geometry optimization.
