Medical science has made revolutionary discoveries around the nosology and aetiology of the neurodegenerative diseases. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia. My colleagues and I are now looking at therapeutics which potentially can delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Advances in diagnosis allow detection of preclinical AD. Neuropathologists working closely with chemical and genetic pathologists have a major role to play in pushing diagnostics and therapeutics to the forefront of clinical management of these diseases.

Phenomic selection based on parental spectra can be used to predict GCA and SCA in a sparse factorial design. Prediction approaches such as genomic selection can be game changers in hybrid breeding. They allow predicting the genetic values of hybrids without the need for their physical production.

Designing dual-targeted nanomedicines to enhance tumor delivery efficacy is a complex challenge, largely due to the barrier posed by blood vessels during systemic delivery. Effective transport across endothelial cells is, therefore, a critical topic of study. Herein, we present a synthetic biology-based approach to engineer dual-targeted ferritin nanocages (Dt-FTn) for understanding receptor-mediated transport across tumor endothelial cells.

Background: Biological control methods involving entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana have been shown to be a valuable approach in integrated pest management as an environmentally friendly alternative to control pests and pathogens. Identifying genetic determinants of pathogenicity in B. bassiana is instrumental for enhancing its virulence against insects like the resistant soybean pest Piezodorus guildinii.

Comparative Analysis of Protist Communities in Oilsands Tailings Using Amplicon Sequencing and Metagenomics.

Environ Microbiol

January 2025

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, and Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The Canadian province of Alberta contains substantial oilsands reservoirs, consisting of bitumen, clay and sand. Extracting oil involves separating bitumen from inorganic particles using hot water and chemical diluents, resulting in liquid tailings waste with ecotoxicologically significant compounds. Ongoing efforts aim to reclaim tailings-affected areas, with protist colonisation serving as one assessment method of reclamation progress.

: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease induced by bacteria in dental plaque that can activate the host's immune-inflammatory response and invade the bloodstream. We hypothesized that a higher periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) is associated with higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers, lower levels of antioxidants, and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn). : Using periodontal parameters, we calculated the PISA score, measured the levels of inflammatory biomarkers and antioxidants in the serum, and took buccal swabs for mtDNA and nuclear DNA (nDNA) extraction.
