AI Article Synopsis

  • A 73-year-old woman experienced bloody discharge and skin thickening in her right breast, prompting concerns for Paget disease.
  • A skin punch biopsy revealed high-grade infiltrating carcinoma with squamous features, ruling out other types like metaplastic carcinoma due to her medical history.
  • A lumpectomy confirmed invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the nipple, linked to Bowen disease, emphasizing the need for awareness of rare diagnoses in patients with prior breast cancer.

Article Abstract

In this unusual case, a 73-year-old woman presented with bloody discharge from her right breast and skin thickening was observed on subsequent imaging. Clinically, the findings raised concern for Paget disease. A skin punch biopsy was performed, revealing a high-grade infiltrating carcinoma with squamous features. Metaplastic carcinoma was a differential diagnosis, given that this patient had a history of invasive ductal carcinoma and radiation treatment in the same breast. A subsequent central lumpectomy confirmed the diagnosis of invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the nipple, occurring in the context of Bowen disease as a precursor lesion. Notably, there was no evidence of ductal carcinoma in situ in the background breast tissue or conventional invasive ductal carcinoma component. Both in situ and invasive forms of squamous cell carcinomas have been rarely reported in the nipple. This case highlights the importance of considering such a rare diagnosis, especially in patients with a history of breast cancer.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of anlotinib combined with vinorelbine (NVB) as a second-line treatment for elderly patients with advanced squamous cell lung carcinoma (SqCLC). The present retrospective analysis included 48 elderly patients (aged ≥65 years) diagnosed with advanced SqCLC who received anlotinib in combination with NVB as a second-line therapy between January 2021 and December 2023. The primary endpoints assessed were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and safety profile.

Inflammatory bowel disease is triggered by abnormalities in epithelial barrier function and immunological responses, although its pathogenesis is poorly understood. The dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)-induced colitis model has been used to examine inflammation in the colon. Damage to mucosa primality occurs in the large intestine and scarcely in the small intestine.

Background: Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) manifests with characteristics of autoimmune disease with organs attacked by pathogenic helper T cells. Recent studies have highlighted the role of T cells in cGVHD pathogenesis. Due to limited understanding of underlying mechanisms, preventing cGVHD after allogenic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has become a major challenge.

Radiotherapy is a widely employed technique for eradication of tumor using high-energy beams, and has been applied to approximately 50% of all solid tumor patients. However, its non-specific, cell-killing property leads to inevitable damage to surrounding normal tissues. Recent findings suggest that radiotherapy-induced tissue damage contributes to the formation of a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment.
