Vibrational spectroscopy of interstellar PAHs: 1-cyanonaphthalene and 2-cyanonaphthalene.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

January 2025

Institute of Astronomy, Space and Earth Science, P177, CIT Road, Scheme 7m, Kolkata 700054, India.

In this work, we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the vibrational spectra of PAH molecules recently detected in the interstellar medium: 1-cyanonaphthalene and 2-cyanonaphthalene. The room temperature IR spectra of 1- and 2-cyanonaphthalene in the region 100-3100 cm and their vibrational Raman spectra in the region 35-3100 cm are reported here for the first time. A detailed spectral analysis is carried out using quantum chemical calculations employing the DFT methodology.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional database search methods for analyzing mass spectrometry data struggle to detect peptides with post-translational modifications (PTMs), leading to a rise in "open modification" search strategies that allow for more flexibility in mass matching.
  • A study by Kong highlighted that the open modification search tool MSFragger may be better at detecting peptides compared to traditional "narrow window" searches, prompting an empirical investigation into this claim.
  • The investigation revealed potential issues with false discovery rate (FDR) control in certain machine learning tools, but upon reanalysis with standard FDR control methods, it was found that concerns about their reliability in proteomics MS/MS searches may not be substantiated.

From Potential Prebiotic Synthons to Useful Chiral Scaffolds: A Synthetic and Structural Reinvestigation of 2-Amino-Aldononitriles.

This paper explores and revisits in detail the formation and characterization of sugar-based aminonitriles, whose ultimate origin can be traced to the interaction of biomolecules with cyanide. Although the synthesis and spectroscopic data of 2-amino-aldononitriles were reported long ago, there are both contradictory and confusing results among the published data. We have now addressed this concern through an exhaustive structural elucidation of acylated 2-amino- and 2-alkyl(aryl)amino-2-deoxyaldonitriles using mass spectrometry and FT-IR, FT-Raman, and NMR spectroscopies.
