Methylglyoxal (MGO) plays an important role not only in physiological processes but also in pathological conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, developing accurate quantitative tools for MGO is of great significance for studying pathogenesis. Among the various methods available, the fluorescent probe method has garnered considerable attention due to its noninvasive detection capability, exceptional optical properties, good biocompatibility, and high sensitivity. In this review, we provide a brief overview of recent research on fluorescent probes used for MGO biosensing and bioimaging in living cells, tissues, and animals. Additionally, we summarize the advantages and existing challenges and also discuss future directions for development in this field.

The increasing concern over microbial resistance to conventional antimicrobial agents used in food preservation has led to growing interest in plant-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as alternative solutions. In this study, the antimicrobial mechanisms of chia seed-derived peptides YACLKVK, KLKKNL, KLLKKYL, and KKLLKI were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Escherichia coli (EC). Fluorometric assays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the peptides disrupt bacterial membranes, with propidium iodide (PI) uptake reaching 72.

Herin, the successful synthesis of a bis Schiff base (L) has been achieved using 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 1,3-diaminoguanidine as raw materials, which was further characterized by infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrum. Moreover, spectroscopic experiments demonstrated that the probe L showed good selectivity and visual detectability for Al. Its detection limit (DL) is 2.

A dual-signal aptamer-based assay utilizing colorimetric and fluorescence techniques was developed for the determination of zearalenone (ZEN). The CdTe quantum dots, serving as the fluorescent signal source, were surface-modified onto FeO@SiO and subsequently functionalized with the aptamer. The COF-Au was modified with complementary chain, which possessed peroxide (POD)-like enzyme properties, and could catalyze the peroxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to ox TMB, resulting in the generation of colorimetric signals.

We present novel fluorescent cholesteryl probes (CNDs) with a modular design based on the solvatochromic 1,8-phthalimide scaffold. We have explored how different modules-linkers and head groups-affect the ability of these probes to integrate into lipid membranes and how they distribute intracellularly in mouse astrocytes and fibroblasts targeting lysosomes and lipid droplets. Each compound was assessed for its solvatochromic behavior in organic solvents and model membranes.

Unreasonable or illegal utilization of pesticides may lead to pollution of agricultural products, especially with some persistent but effective pesticides. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop sensitive and rapid methods for pesticide detection to ensure the safety of agricultural products. Herein, a dual-mode ratiometric sensing system utilizing two gold nanoclusters (G/R-AuNCs) was designed and constructed for paraquat (PQ) detection, a typical, highly toxic, widely used pesticide.
