Air-water exchange is inevitably accompanied by the transportation of contaminants between atmosphere and water, which significantly leads to the alterations of toxicity and risks. However, the resulting changes of toxicity and risk in water and air due to the cross-interfacial transport of pollutants are still unclear. In this study, the water and atmospheric samples at the Pengxi River located in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), China, were collected in winter and summer seasons respectively. The contaminated water exhibited higher toxicity effects than air in multiple toxicity endpoint tests. Besides, waters collected during winter exhibited greater toxicity effects than in summer. The concentrations of ΣPAHs were 48.0-445 ng L in the water and 9.44-82.3 ng/m in the air, with ΣPAHs significantly higher in winter than in summer for water samples. Notably, the 2-3 ring PAHs showed a tendency to volatilize from water to air and may increase atmospheric toxicity, whereas the 4-6 ring PAHs tend to be deposited from air to water and may heighten toxicity in the water. Correlation analysis indicated that PAHs were important toxicants in the air, posing higher incremental carcinogenic risk, particularly during winter. Thus, the changes in toxicity and risk caused by the water-air exchange of pollutants cannot be ignored. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the changes in toxicity effects and health risks caused by the air-water exchange of pollutants. The importance of considering the toxic effects and health concerns of micropollutants in the air as important as in water is emphasized.

Microwave-optical interaction and its effective utilization are vital technologies at the frontier of classical and quantum sciences for communication, sensing, and imaging. Typically, state-of-the-art microwave-to-optical converters are realized by fiber and circuit approaches with multiple processing steps, and external powers are necessary, which leads to many limitations. Here, we propose a programmable metasurface that can achieve direct and high-speed free-space microwave-to-laser conversion.

Due to the rapid increase in industrial and urban areas, environmental pollution is increasing worldwide, which is causing unwanted changes in air, water, and soil at biological, physical, as well as chemical levels that ultimately causing the negative effects in living things because of toxic level of chromium (Cr). However, nanotechnology is capturing great interest worldwide due to their stirring applications in various fields. For this purpose, a pot experiment was conducted to examine plant growth and exo-physiology in rice (Oryza sativa L.

Article Synopsis
  • Microplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were studied in Baiyangdian Lake, China, revealing significant presence in both water and sediment with high average abundances of microplastics.
  • The migration of PAHs at lake interfaces was influenced by microplastics, showing specific patterns of volatilization and deposition between water, sediment, and air.
  • Overall, the research indicates that microplastics enhance the accumulation of PAHs in aquatic environments, posing a greater risk to water quality and aquatic life.

Making Interfacial Solar Evaporation of Seawater Faster than Fresh Water.

Adv Mater

Future Industries Institute, UniSA STEM, University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus, Adelaide, SA, 5095, Australia.

Interfacial solar evaporation-based seawater desalination is regarded as one of the most promising strategies to alleviate freshwater scarcity. However, the solar evaporation rate of real seawater is significantly constricted by the ubiquitous salts present in seawater. In addition to the common issue of salt accumulation on the evaporation surface during solar evaporation, strong hydration between salt ions and water molecules leads to a lower evaporation rate for real seawater compared to pure water.
