Article Abstract
Plants belonging to the genus have shown promise in exerting antiviral activity. In this study, sp. "Khamin Oi" (CKO), a traditional Thai medicinal herb listed in Thai herbal pharmacopoeia, was subjected to extraction using a variety of solvents. Consequently, LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS analyses were conducted to assess the phytochemical profiles of all the crude extracts and identify the compounds potentially responsible for their antiviral effects. The antiviral effects of these extracts against the human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) were also investigated. An in-cell ELISA was used to investigate the anti-HCoV-OC43 replication activity of the crude rhizome extracts of CKO. Among the extracts, the crude hexane extract of CKO exhibited the lowest IC (3.62 μg/mL), with a high selectivity index (SI) of 31.90, despite having the lowest curcuminoid content. While the methanolic extract of L., known for its high curcuminoid content among species, showed an IC of 14.83 μg/mL with an SI of 2.80. Further and investigations of CKO crude extract are necessary to understand its potential anti-HCoV-OC43 properties.

Recently, Curcuma rhizome-related foods with claimed health benefits have been used worldwide; however, correct identification and quality assessment have not been conducted. Due to the wide distribution and morphological similarities of Curcuma species, the classification of some species is debated and nomenclature is inconsistent among countries. In this study, to elucidate specific molecular markers of medicinally used Curcuma species in Asia, and to solve the confusion on the reported botanical origin of crude drugs, molecular analysis based on the intron length polymorphism (ILP) in genes encoding diketide-CoA synthase and curcumin synthase and the trnK intron sequences was performed using 59 plant specimens and 42 crude drug samples from 13 Curcuma species, obtained from Asian countries.
The arsenic accumulation in rhizomes of Zingiberaceous plants was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry interfaced with hydride generation system (HG-AAS). The raw herbal materials, rhizomes, were collected from different regions of Thailand between December 2011 and January 2012. Six well-known Zingiberaceous plants, 16 samples from each and a total of 96 samples, were analyzed Alpinia galanga (Khaa), Boesenbergia rotunda (Kra-chaai), Curcuma longa (Khamin-chan), Curcuma zedoaria (Khamin-oi), Zingiber cassumunar (Plai) and Zingiber officinale (Ginger).
The effects of Curcuma longa (khamin chan) and Curcuma sp. "khamin-oi" (khamin-oi), as well as isolated major curcuminoids on intestinal P-gp functions were evaluated in vitro. The accumulation of R123 in Caco-2 cells was increased and the R123 efflux ratios were significantly decreased by both Curcuma longa and Curcuma sp.
