AI Article Synopsis

  • - High levels of antibodies to interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) are linked to infections from intracellular pathogens, especially non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and tuberculosis (MTB).
  • - The case study discusses a non-immunosuppressed patient who had both MTB infection and complications from NTM, which led to a severe condition called secondary hemophagocytic syndrome.
  • - The report emphasizes the importance of recognizing this uncommon combination of infections to prevent misdiagnosis or unnecessary treatments for patients.

Article Abstract

High-titer antibodies to interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) are strongly correlated with infections caused by intracellular pathogens, particularly non-tuberculous mycobacteria and (TM). However, cases of concurrent infections with TM and (MTB) in non-immunosuppressed patients are extremely rare. We presented a clinical case of a patient with anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies who developed an MTB infection complicated by , which subsequently led to secondary hemophagocytic syndrome. This report aimed to raise clinicians' awareness of this rare association to minimize the risk of misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis.

Equid alphaherpesvirus 4 (EqAHV4; , ; equine rhinopneumonitis virus) has seldom been associated with complications such as abortion and myeloencephalopathy, given the low tendency of this virus to induce viremia. We investigated the frequency of EqAHV4 viremia in horses with fever and respiratory signs. Case selection included all equids with EqAHV4 quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR)-positive nasal secretions (defined as EqAHV4 qPCR-positive cases) submitted to a diagnostic laboratory.

Background: Drivers of COVID-19 severity are multifactorial and include multidimensional and potentially interacting factors encompassing viral determinants and host-related factors (i.e., demographics, pre-existing conditions and/or genetics), thus complicating the prediction of clinical outcomes for different severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) variants.

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can cause life-threatening diseases in immunosuppressed patients. Some of the patients with connective tissue disease develop CMV infection, and approximately half of this group has been reported to have received pulsed-methylprednisolone (p-MPSL) therapy. This study aimed to identify predictors of the onset of CMV infection in patients receiving p-MPSL therapy for connective tissue disease.

With the increasing use of disease modifying therapies as treatment for multiple sclerosis, knowledge of the rare but possibly severe adverse events becomes increasingly important. We present a case of Varicella-Zoster virus associated vasculopathy in a young male multiple sclerosis patient, treated with dimethyl fumarate. We aim to address this rare but potentially deadly complication of varicella-Zoster virus infection and spread awareness about the increased risk in this patient population.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in paediatric kidney transplant recipients is common. Infection including urinary tract infection (UTI) and rejection are the most common causes in children. Surgical complications often cause AKI early post-transplant, whereas BK polyomavirus nephropathy rarely occurs in the first month post-transplant.
