The Wade Programme in surgical anatomy: educational approach and 10-year review.

Curr Probl Surg

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK; School of Medicine, University of St Andrews, St Andrews, UK.

Published: December 2024

Background: Against a background of significant changes in UK medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) established the Wade Programme in Surgical Anatomy in 2012, as a means of supporting the study of surgical anatomy throughout training. This article provides a 10-year review of the Wade Programme and its educational foundation.

Methods: A novel methodology, the 'Wade Educational Approach', was used in the design and development of a portfolio of professional courses at three training levels: Level 1 - RCSEd Affiliate, Level 2 - Early Years (MRCS) and Level 3 - Later Years (FRCS and CPD). The Wade Approach is founded on the principles of visualization ('visualize'), conceptual understanding ('conceptualize') and the active application of anatomical knowledge to all aspects of surgical practice ('apply').

Results: From 2012 to 2022, 105 courses were delivered to 1191 delegates across the globe, with a feedback form response rate of 95%. Feedback was uniformly excellent across the complete course portfolio, with the Wade Approach cited as a novel strategy for principle-based learning and teaching. The two-fold development of a novel educational approach and modular course design proved adaptable across a wide range of different courses, levels and specialties.

Conclusion: The Wade Programme was established to support the study of surgical anatomy throughout training, from undergraduate study to consultant practice. The Wade Approach should also be of help to all who are engaged in anatomy education and the training of the next generation of clinicians.

Real-World Patient-Reported and Neurocognitive Outcomes in the Year After Axicabtagene Ciloleucel.

Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior, Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, USA 33612. Electronic address:

Background: Axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel), a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, has significantly improved clinical outcomes in adult patients with relapsed/refractory large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL). However, few studies have examined patient-reported outcomes (PROs) or neurocognitive performance in patients treated with axi-cel. Moreover, no longitudinal PRO study has reported on patients treated with axi-cel as standard of care in the United States, to our knowledge.

The impact of culture and lived experiences on health professions education and practice.

Health professions educators are not immune to the impact our lived experiences and associated cultures, including healthcare professional/higher education culture, can have on the development and manifestation of biases. These biases can impact students during the admissions process, their interactions with faculty in the classroom, selection for rewards and recognition, and access to research opportunities. Likewise, our colleagues can be affected during the hiring process, in their assignment to committees, and during the promotion and tenure process.

The sociodemographic makeup of the professoriate in health and healthcare has been shown to have direct implications for graduation rates among minoritized populations, diversity in healthcare, the prevalence of health equity scholarship, and population health broadly. Black women academics, who navigate higher education as members of two minoritized groups, need to be intentionally recruited and retained using tailored approaches. Given the historical and ongoing dearth of Black women faculty in health and healthcare, and the mounting literature on health equity highlighting the benefits of Black women representation in healthcare, I propose an approach to the recruitment and retention of Black women using a Black feminist theory.

Estimates of the eligible population for Australia's targeted National Lung Cancer Screening Program, 2025-2030.

Public Health Res Pract

December 2024

The Daffodil Centre, The University of Sydney, a joint venture with Cancer Council NSW, Woolloomooloo, NSW, Australia.

Australia's National Lung Cancer Screening Program will commence in July 2025, targeted at individuals aged 50-70 years with a 30 pack-year smoking history (equivalent to 20 cigarettes per day for 30 years), who either currently smoke or have quit within the past 10 years. We forecasted the number of screening-eligible individuals over the first 5 years of the program using data from the 2019 National Drug Strategy Household Survey and the 2022 Australian Bureau of Statistics population projections. Multiple imputation integrated with predictive modelling of future or unmeasured smoking characteristics was used to address missing data and, simultaneously, to project individuals' smoking histories to 2030.
