Enantioenrichment of amino acids is essential during the early chemical evolution leading to the origin of life. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms remain unsolved. Dimerization of enantiomers is the first molecular process in the nucleation of deposition and crystallization, which are both essential for enantioenrichment. Here, we report the enantioselective interactions of dimers of chiral intermediates, , aminonitriles, in both gas and water environments based on density functional theory (DFT) and more accurate coupled-cluster (CC) calculations. We show that all the aminonitriles stabilize the homochiral dimer preferentially to the heterochiral dimer in the gas phase, while this trend was not observed in water. The energies of the enantioselective interactions in aminonitriles are substantially lower compared to those in amino acids, especially isovaline. These results suggest that prebiotic enhancements of enantiomeric excess are more likely to occur in amino acids than in the aminonitrile intermediates.

Chiral nanomaterials as vaccine adjuvants: a new horizon in immunotherapy.

Nanoscale

December 2024

Laboratory of Chemical Biology, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun, Jilin, 130022, China.

Chiral nanomaterials are emerging as a promising class of vaccine adjuvants with the potential to significantly enhance vaccine efficacy, especially in the context of cancer immunotherapy. These nanomaterials can trigger enantioselective immune responses, enabling more precise and efficient vaccines. Their distinctive optical, electronic, and catalytic characteristics, along with the ability to be engineered with specific physical and chemical properties, make them highly suitable for next-generation vaccines development.

- exhibited significant aggregation-induced Emission (AIE) characteristics, including high brightness (αAIE ≈ 40), robust light stability, a substantial Stokes shift (128 nm), and a high signal-to-noise ratio, effectively overcoming aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Derived from the axially chiral -H-BINOL, - was synthesized via nucleophilic cyclization and exhibited pronounced self-assembly properties. Through robust intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, - formed diverse supramolecular structures, including spherical flower-like aggregates, hollow-core triangular tubules, hexagonal tubules, and irregular white block-like stacks.

Quadruplex DNA Hybrid Catalysts for Enantioselective Reactions.

Beyond the pivotal genetic roles of DNA, its duplex structures as chiral scaffolds interacting with metal complexes give rise to DNA hybrid catalysts for a set of aqueous-phase enantioselective reactions. Besides DNA duplex, DNA quadruplexes including G-quadruplex and i-motif show tunable structures with variable non-canonical base pairs. In this concept, based on the interaction between metal species and DNA, we classify the construction strategies of quadruplex DNA hybrid catalysts into supramolecular, covalent and coordinative modes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights the urgent issue of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) spread in the environment, focusing on the impact of the herbicide napropamide (NAP) on plasmid transfer between bacteria.
  • - It found that R-NAP significantly enhances plasmid transfer efficiency from E. coli to Bacillus subtilis compared to its S-enantiomer, particularly at a concentration of 5 mg/L, while also affecting bacterial structures and increasing membrane permeability.
  • - The research identifies specific genes involved in this transfer and suggests that careful management of herbicides like R-NAP is necessary in agricultural settings to prevent the spread of ARGs, particularly in fields treated with livestock manure.
