We demonstrate the formation of the near field with non-trivial phase distribution using surface plasmon interference devices, and experimental quantitative imaging of that phase with near-field phase microscopy. The phase distribution formed with a single device can be controlled by the polarization of the external illumination and the area of the device assigned to the object wave. A comparison of the experimental data to a numerical electromagnetic model and an analytical model assigns the origin of the near-field phase to the out-of-plane electric component of surface plasmon polaritons, and also verifies the predictive power of the models. We demonstrate a formation of near-field plane waves with different propagation directions on a single device, or even simultaneously at distinct areas of a single device. Our findings open the way to the imaging and tomography of phase objects in the near field.

In this Letter, we present a theoretical study based on the Lorentz function and harmonic oscillator model to explore temporal dynamics of charge transfer plasmon (CTP) resonances. By fitting scattering curves and near-field oscillations, we determine the dephasing time of CTP modes in conductively connected gold nanodisk dimers. We show that, compared with the well-known particle plasmon and dimer plasmon modes, the CTP mode has a narrow spectral width and longer lifetime.

Scaffolds are of great interest in tissue engineering associated with regenerative medicine owing to their ability to mimic biological structures and provide a support for a new tissue formation. Several techniques are used to produce biological scaffolds; among them, far-field electrospinning (FFES) process is widely used due to its versatility in producing promising structures similar to native tissues owing to the electrospun nanofibers. On the other hand, near-field electrospinning (NFES) has been investigated due to the possibility of creating scaffolds with suitable architecture for its use in specific biological tissues.

Nowadays, metasurfaces have attracted considerable attention due to their promising and advanced control of electromagnetic (EM) waves. However, it is still challenging to shape guided waves into desired free-space mode, while simultaneously manipulating spatial incident waves using a single metasurface. Herein, a class of metasurfaces capable of multiplexing guided and space waves is proposed to achieve advanced EM functionalities in microwave regions, which can find great application potentials in radar systems, wireless communications, and wireless power transfer (WPT).

X-ray speckles have been used in a wide range of experiments, including imaging (and tomography), wavefront sensing, spatial coherence measurements, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and ptychography. In this review and experimental comparison, we focus on using X-ray near-field speckle grains as wavefront markers and numerical methods for retrieving the phase information they contain. We present the most common tracking methods, introducing the existing algorithms with their specifications and comparing their performances under various experimental conditions.

The tunability of spectral lineshapes, ranging from Lorentzian to Fano profiles, is essential for advancing nanoscale photonic technologies. Conventional far-field techniques are insufficient for studying nanoscale phenomena, particularly within the terahertz (THz) range. In this work, we use a U-shaped resonant ring on a waveguide substrate to achieve precise modulation of Lorentzian, Fano, and antiresonance profiles.
