Metallic and dielectric nanoscatterers are optical pigments that offer rich resonating coloration in the subwavelength regime with prolonged material consistency. Recent advances in responsive materials, whose mechanical shapes and optical properties can change in response to stimuli, expand the scope of scattering-based colorations from static to active. Thus, active color-changing pixels are achieved with extremely high spatial resolution, in conjunction with various responsive polymers and phase-change materials. This review discusses recent progress in developing such responsive photonic nanopixels, ranging from electrochromic to other color-changing concepts. We describe what parameters permit modulation of the scattering colors and highlight superior functional devices. Potential fields of application focusing on imaging devices, including active full-color printing and flexible displays, information encryption, anticounterfeiting, and active holograms, are also discussed.

HClO is considered a potential contributing factor and biomarker of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Accurate monitoring of lysosomal HClO is important for further developing specific diagnostic and therapeutic schedules for IBD. However, only rare types of fluorescent probes have been reported for detecting HClO in IBD so far.

In liquid crystal (LC) cells, the surface patterning directs the self-assembly of the uniaxial building blocks in the bulk, enabling the design of stimuli-response optical devices with various functionalities. The combination of different anchoring patterns at both substrates can lead to surface induced frustration, preventing a purely planar and defect-free configuration. In cells with crossed assembly of rotating anchoring patterns, elastic deformations allow to obtain a defect-free bulk configuration, but an electrical stimulus can induce disclination lines.

Co-assemblies of Silver Nanoclusters and Fullerenols With Enhanced Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Response.

Small Methods

January 2025

National Engineering Research Center for Colloidal Materials, Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry (Ministry of Education), School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan, 250100, China.

Exploring potential third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials attracts ever-increasing attention. Given that the atomically precise and rich adjustable structural features of silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs), as well as the unique π-electron conjugated system of carbon-based nanomaterials, a supramolecular co-assembly amplification strategy to enhance the luminescent intensity and NLO performance of the hybrids of the two components, are constructed and the relationship between structures and optical properties are investigated. By combining water soluble Ag NCs [(NH)[Ag(mna)] (Hmna = 2-mercaptonicotinic acid, abbreviated to Ag─NCs hereafter) containing uncoordinated carboxyl groups with water-soluble fullerene derivatives modified with multiple hydroxyl groups (fullerenols, C─OH), the π-electron delocalization is expanded owing to non-covalent hydrogen bonding effect between Ag6─NCs and C─OH, which provides a feasible basis for realizing the NLO response.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, SRM University, Guntur 522240, Andhra Pradesh, India.

We propose herein a metamaterial (MM) dual-band THz sensor for various biomedical sensing applications. An MM is a material engineered to have a particular property that is rarely observed in naturally occurring materials with an aperiodic subwavelength arrangement. MM properties across a wide range of frequencies, like high sensitivity and quality factors, remain challenging to obtain.

The practical implementation of terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopic systems in real operational conditions requires them to be of a compact size, to have enhanced functionality, and to be user-friendly. This work demonstrates the single-sided integration of Fresnel-zone-plate-based optical elements with InGaAs bow-tie diodes directly on a semiconductor chip. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize the Fresnel zone plate's focal length and the InP substrate's thickness to achieve constructive interference at 600 GHz, room-temperature operation and achieve a sensitivity more than an order of magnitude higher-up to 24.
