The integration of deep neural networks with the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method has marked a substantial advancement in solving the Schrödinger equation. In this work we enforce spin symmetry in the neural-network-based VMC calculation using a modified optimization target. Our method is designed to solve for the ground state and multiple excited states with target spin symmetry at a low computational cost. It predicts accurate energies while maintaining the correct symmetry in strongly correlated systems, even in cases in which different spin states are nearly degenerate. Our approach also excels at spin-gap calculations, including the singlet-triplet gap in biradical systems, which is of high interest in photochemistry. Overall, this work establishes a robust framework for efficiently calculating various quantum states with specific spin symmetry in correlated systems.

Nonlocal Huygens' meta-lens for high-quality-factor spin-multiplexing imaging.

Combining bright-field and edge-enhanced imaging affords an effective avenue for extracting complex morphological information from objects, which is particularly beneficial for biological imaging. Multiplexing meta-lenses present promising candidates for achieving this functionality. However, current multiplexing meta-lenses lack spectral modulation, and crosstalk between different wavelengths hampers the imaging quality, especially for biological samples requiring precise wavelength specificity.

Accurately calculating the diradical character () of molecular systems remains a significant challenge due to the scarcity of experimental data and the inherent multireference nature of the electronic structure. In this study, various quantum mechanical approaches, including broken symmetry density functional theory (BS-DFT), spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory (SF-TDDFT), mixed-reference spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory (MRSF-TDDFT), complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF), complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), and multiconfigurational pair-density functional theory (MCPDFT), are employed to compute the singlet-triplet energy gaps () and values in Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller analogous diradicals. By systematically comparing the results from these computational methods, we identify optimally tuned long-range corrected functional CAM-B3LYP in the BS-DFT framework as a most efficient method for accurately and affordably predicting both and values.

Exact Quantization of Topological Order Parameter in SU(N) Spin Models, N-ality Transformation and Ingappabilities.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

RIKEN, Condensed Matter Theory Laboratory, CPR, Wako, Saitama 351-0198, Japan.

We show that the ground-state expectation value of twisting operator is a topological order parameter for U(1)- and Z_{N}-symmetric symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in one-dimensional "spin" systems-it is quantized in the thermodynamic limit and can be used to identify different SPT phases and to diagnose phase transitions among them. We prove that this (nonlocal) order parameter must take values in Nth roots of unity, and its value can be changed by a generalized lattice translation acting as an N-ality transformation connecting distinct phases. This result also implies the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) ingappability for SU(N) spins if we further impose a general translation symmetry.

Symmetry: A Fundamental Resource for Quantum Coherence and Metrology.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Ens de Lyon, Université Lyon, CNRS, Laboratoire de Physique, F-69342 Lyon, France.

We introduce a new paradigm for the preparation of deeply entangled states useful for quantum metrology. We show that, when the quantum state is an eigenstate of an operator A, observables G which are completely off diagonal with respect to A have purely quantum fluctuations, as quantified by the quantum Fisher information, namely, F_{Q}(G)=4⟨G^{2}⟩. This property holds regardless of the purity of the quantum state, and it implies that off-diagonal fluctuations represent a metrological resource for phase estimation.

Nematic versus Kekulé Phases in Twisted Bilayer Graphene under Hydrostatic Pressure.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, CSIC, E-28049 Madrid, Spain.

We address the precise determination of the phase diagram of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene under hydrostatic pressure within a self-consistent Hartree-Fock method in real space, including all the remote bands of the system. We further present a novel algorithm that maps the full real-space density matrix to a 4×4 density matrix based on a SU(4) symmetry of sublattice and valley degrees of freedom. We find a quantum critical point between a nematic and a Kekulé phase, and show also that our microscopic approach displays a strong particle-hole asymmetry in the weak coupling regime.
