AI Article Synopsis

  • The study investigates the differences in impulsivity between adolescents with only ADHD and those with both ADHD and Internet gaming disorder (IGD).
  • A total of 81 patients with ADHD alone and 59 with comorbid ADHD and IGD were assessed using several tasks measuring impulsivity.
  • Results showed that those with comorbid ADHD and IGD exhibited higher impulsivity across different dimensions, highlighting specific risk factors that can aid in distinguishing the conditions for better treatment approaches.

Article Abstract

Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated that patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have high impulsivity. However, few studies have been published on the differences in impulsivity between patients presenting with comorbidity of ADHD and Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and ADHD alone.

Aim: The present study designed an experiment to address this significant question, to explore the differences in impulsivity between individuals with ADHD and those with comorbid ADHD and IGD, specifically focusing on various dimensions of impulsivity.

Methods: A total of 81 adolescents with ADHD alone and 59 patients with comorbidity of ADHD and IGD were included in this study, and all of them were assessed using the Stop-signal Task (SST), Delay Discount Task (DDT), and Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART).

Results: Patients with comorbid ADHD and IGD had higher impulsivity than those with only ADHD, and it was expressed in different dimensions. Additionally, response inhibition, delayed discount rate, risky decision-making behavior, inattention, and hyperactivity were identified as risk factors for comorbid ADHD and IGD.

Conclusion: These findings can help distinguish whether ADHD is comorbid with IGD in clinical settings. They will also be helpful in the implementation of more precise treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare psychiatric comorbidities between internet gaming disorder (IGD) and gaming disorder (GD) or hazardous gaming (HG) using DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria.
  • It involved 60 individuals with GD, 45 with HG, and 120 control participants, assessing various disorders and traits through interviews and psychological tests.
  • Results show that ADHD, depressive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder are significant comorbidities for GD, while ADHD is the primary comorbidity for HG; thus, interventions should consider these psychiatric factors and individual traits.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how various baseline mental disorders may predict the development of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in university students over one to three years, focusing on a group of 2,144 first-year students from six Mexican universities.
  • - Findings show that having any mental disorder at baseline increases the likelihood of developing IGD by 2.33 times, although some individual disorders had diminishing effects when comorbidities were present.
  • - Ultimately, only major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder were significantly linked to new cases of IGD, highlighting the need for further research to clarify the relationships observed in previous studies.

Background: Recognizing the crucial importance of understanding the impact of video games on health in today's gaming-dominated world, our study aimed to investigate the relationship between gaming time and Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). Despite the widespread assumption that a connection exists between both, previous studies have revealed highly variable associations, highlighting significant weaknesses in establishing a robust link.

Methods: To unravel this complex relationship, we recruited two independent samples of League of Legends players.
