AI Article Synopsis

  • Ozone nucleolysis is a minimally invasive treatment that has shown promise for relieving pain from herniated discs, particularly in patients with lumbosciatica.
  • A study involving 34 patients demonstrated that 85% experienced pain relief after treatment, with better outcomes noted in younger patients and specific types of disc herniations.
  • Overall, ozone therapy is considered a safe, cost-effective option that could help patients avoid more invasive surgical procedures while improving their quality of life.

Article Abstract

Objectives: Ozone (O-O) nucleolysis is emerging as a promising minimally invasive therapy for treating lumbosciatica due to herniated discs. This study aims to evaluate changes in pain and functional abilities before and after ozone disc nucleolysis in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH).

Materials And Methods: This study included 34 patients (15 males, 19 females; age range 17-76, average age 46.7 ± 11.2 years) treated between April 2018 and May 2022. A single dose of an O-O mixture (5 ml, 30 µg/ml) was injected into the disc under fluoroscopic guidance via a lateral approach, followed by an additional periradicular injection of the same mixture (5 ml) combined with a corticosteroid (2 ml). Pain and patient satisfaction were assessed using the VAS score and modified MacNab criteria, while MRI findings evaluated treatment-related changes, including herniated disc surface and disc height.

Results: VAS scores indicated pain improvement in 85% of patients, with 82% achieving satisfactory outcomes per modified MacNab criteria. Patients under 50 years of age showed greater responsiveness to ozone therapy. Central LDH responded more favorably than larger foraminal herniations, and hernias with a larger surface area than the average also showed better outcomes. No complications were observed.

Conclusion: Ozone therapy is a cost-effective, simple, and safe minimally invasive technique that provides significant pain relief and functional improvement. It may be a reliable and competitive treatment option for patients with persistent symptoms after conservative treatment and before considering surgical intervention. Key Points •Ozone nucleolysis provides a minimally invasive treatment for lumbosciatica with reduced recovery time. •Injecting oxygen-ozone into the disc decreases its volume and inflammation, easing nerve pressure. •Initial results show significant pain relief and improved mobility in patients following treatment. •This method appears safe, with fewer complications than traditional surgery for herniated discs.

Complex liver cancer is often difficult to expose or dissect, and the surgery is often challenging. 3D-printed models may realistically present 3D anatomical structure, which has certain value in planning and training of liver surgery. However, the existing 3D-printed models are all monolithic models, which are difficult to reuse and limited in clinical application.

Background: The experience with Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in neonatal intestinal surgery is very limited. We present the development and implementation of an Enhanced Recovery Protocol (ERP) designed specifically for neonates treated for congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO), and early outcome after implementation.

Methods: An ERP for CDO was developed and implemented.

Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS) has become a well-established alternative to traditional median sternotomy at high-volume surgical centers. Advancements in surgical instruments have led to further refinement of MIMVS. However, MIMVS remains limited to select patients in select settings.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive treatment that elicits tumor apoptosis using laser light exclusively applied to the tumor site. IR-783, a heptamethine cyanine (HMC) dye, impedes the proliferation of breast cancer cells, even without light. Although studies have investigated the efficacy of IR-783 in cell and animal studies, its efficacy in clinical settings remains unknown.

: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the clinical efficacy, benefits, and limitations of piezosurgery in tooth extractions compared to conventional methods. Piezosurgery has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative, promoting better preservation of soft tissues and bone structures. Understanding its impact on postoperative outcomes such as pain, swelling, trismus, and bone healing is critical for its application in oral surgery; We restricted our search to English-language articles published between 1 January 2004 and 28 August 2024, in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science.
