Understanding phenology and its regulation is central for the agronomic adaptation of chickpea. We grew 24 chickpea genotypes in 12 environments to analyse: the environmental and genotypic drivers of phenology; associations between phenology and yield; and phenotypes associated with allelic variants of three flowering related candidate loci: CaELF3a; a cluster of three FT genes on chromosome 3; and an orthologue of the floral promoter GIGANTEA on chromosome 4. A simple model with 3 genotype-specific parameters explained the differences in flowering response to daylength. Environmental factors causing flower abortion, such as low temperature and radiation and high humidity, led to a longer flowering-to-podding interval. Late podding associated with poor partition to grain, limiting yield in favourable environments. Sonali, carrying the early allele of Caelf3a (elf3a), was generally the earliest to set pod, had low biomass but the highest harvest index. Genotypes combining the early variants of GIGANTEA and FT orthologues featured early reproduction and high harvest index, returning high yield in favourable environments. Our results emphasise the importance of pod set, rather than flowering, as a target for breeding, agronomic, and modelling applications.

Atomically Dispersed FeMo Dual Sites for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Research and Development Center of Membrane Science and Technology, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China.

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) is an attractive strategy for the green and distributed production of ammonia (NH); however, it suffers from weak N adsorption and a high energy barrier of hydrogenation. Atomically dispersed metal dual-site catalysts with an optimized electronic structure and exceptional catalytic activity are expected to be competent for knotty hydrogenation reactions including the eNRR. Inspired by the bimetallic FeMo cofactor in biological nitrogenase, herein, an atomically dispersed FeMo dual site anchored in nitrogen-doped carbon is proposed to induce a favorable electronic structure and binding energy.

Characterization of Hazelnut Trees in Open Field Through High-Resolution UAV-Based Imagery and Vegetation Indices.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Control and Computer Engineering (DAUIN), Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24, 10129 Torino, Italy.

The increasing demand for hazelnut kernels is favoring an upsurge in hazelnut cultivation worldwide, but ongoing climate change threatens this crop, affecting yield decreases and subject to uncontrolled pathogen and parasite attacks. Technical advances in precision agriculture are expected to support farmers to more efficiently control the physio-pathological status of crops. Here, we report a straightforward approach to monitoring hazelnut trees in an open field, using aerial multispectral pictures taken by drones.

Screening and Selection of Native Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Chilean Grapes.

Foods

January 2025

Departamento de Ingeniería Química y Bioprocesos, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago 6904411, Chile.

The aim of this study was investigating the biological diversity of lactic acid bacteria isolated from Chilean grapes and identifying potential candidates for use as malolactic fermentation starter cultures. The isolated bacteria underwent a comprehensive six-stage screening process, which was mutually exclusive except for the evaluation of tyramine production and citric acid intake. This process included morphological, metabolic, fermentation yield, and resistance tests to identify promising malolactic strains.

Preparation Process of In Situ MgB Material with Ex Situ MgB Barrier to Obtain Long Sections of Superconducting Multicore Wires.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Division of Agrotechnological Systems Engineering and Work Safety, Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, 25 Norwida St., 50-375 Wroclaw, Poland.

In the present study, our emphasis was directed towards the fabrication process of long multi-core superconducting wires, each spanning several hundred meters. These wires feature an in situ MgB core, an ex situ MgB barrier, and a copper shield. The cost-effectiveness of these constituent materials, coupled with a judicious arrangement of internal components, facilitates the utilization of an economical shielding material for the resulting wire.

Fruit Vinegars as Natural and Bioactive Chitosan Solvents in the Production of Chitosan-Based Films.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Poznan University of Life Sciences, Wojska Polskiego 75, 60625 Poznan, Poland.

Natural fruit vinegars, derived from various fruits, enhance culinary experience and offer potential health benefits due to their bioactive compounds. In this study, fruit vinegars (apple, blackcurrant, and cherry) were used as natural solvents for producing chitosan films, introducing an environmentally friendly approach. Fruit vinegars and chitosan-based solutions were examined for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
