Cut Bodies: Unica Zürn's Agential (Sur)Realism.

Published: December 2024

This article argues that mid-century Surrealist German author Unica Zürn's writing on the fetus and pregnancy anticipates New Materialist analyses of the liveliness of matter and the interactions of biology and history. Using philosopher-physicist Karen Barad's theories of Agential Realism as a lens, I unite a close reading of key moments in Zürn's oeuvre with an examination of medical practices in the midcentury and the lingering history of Nazi eugenics, demonstrating how politics and science come to both shape and deform the body in Zürn's prose. Through the interactions of both language and material, the bodies of the mother and fetus begin to double each other, and holocaust atrocities and abortion practices take on uncanny resonances.

This study was mainly aimed at exploring the effect of gender on the patterns of Physical Activty (PA) in older people living in an area of exceptional longevity, the so-called Sardinian Blue Zone. Furthermore, the study intended to investigate the nature of the relationships among PA metrics, cognitive measures, and age. One hundred and nine community-dwelling participants (M = 81.

Presenilins as hub proteins controlling the endocytic and autophagic pathways and small extracellular vesicle secretion.

J Extracell Vesicles

January 2025

IPMC, UMR7275 CNRS-UniCA, INSERM U1323, team certified "Laboratory of Excellence (LABEX) Distalz", Valbonne, France.

Emerging evidence indicates that autophagy is tightly connected to the endocytic pathway. Here, we questioned the role of presenilins (PSENs 1 and 2), previously shown to be involved in autophagy regulation, in the secretion of small endocytic-originating extracellular vesicles known as exosomes. Indeed, while wild-type cells responded to stimuli promoting both multivesicular endosome (MVE) formation and secretion of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) enriched in canonical exosomal proteins, PSEN-deficient cells were almost unaffected to these stimuli.

The role of Anti-PAD4, Anti-CarP, and Anti-RA33 antibodies combined with RF and ACPA in predicting abatacept response in rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis Res Ther

January 2025

Department of Medical Science and Public Health, Rheumatology Unit, University of Cagliari, Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria di Cagliari, SS 554 Monserrato (CA), Bivio Sestu, Monserrato, 09042, Italy.

Objectives: To explore the role of newly emerging autoantibodies (AAbs) - peptidyl-arginine deiminase 4 (aPAD4), carbamylated proteins (aCarP), and anti-RA33 (aRA33) - alongside the traditionally assessed rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), in predicting the response to abatacept (ABT) and its retention rate in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.

Methods: Data from 121 consecutive ABT-treated RA patients were recorded. The RF and ACPA status were retrospectively assessed by reviewing the patients' clinical records.

The UNICA Sleep HRV Analysis tool: an integrated open-source tool for heart rate variability analysis during sleep.

Physiol Meas

January 2025

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE), University of Cagliari, Via Marengo, Cagliari, Sardegna, 09123, ITALY.

Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis during sleep plays a key role for understanding autonomic nervous system function and assessing cardiovascular health. The UNICA Sleep HRV analysis (UNICA-HRV) tool is a novel, open-source MATLAB tool designed to fill the gap in current HRV analysis tools. In particular, the integration of ECG and HRV data with hypnogram information, which illustrates the progression through the different sleep stages, ease the computation of HRV metrics in polysomnographic recordings.

Antibody dynamics in dogs submitted to different canine visceral leishmaniasis treatment protocols.

Rev Bras Parasitol Vet

January 2025

Programa de Pós-graduação em Medicina Veterinária, Laboratório de Doenças Parasitárias, Departamento de Medicina Veterinária Preventiva, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria - UFSM, Santa Maria, RS, Brasil.

This study evaluated dynamics of antibodies in dogs treated for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Twenty-one dogs naturally infected by Leishmania spp. were grouped based on the treatment protocol: G1 (n=4) received allopurinol; G2 (n=10) allopurinol with miltefosine; and G3 (n=7) allopurinol, miltefosine and Leish-Tec® vaccine.
