Thermal energy has been considered the exclusive driving force in thermochemical catalysis, yet associated lattice expansion effects have been overlooked. To shed new light on this issue, variable temperature high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (HR-(S)TEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) were employed to provide detailed information on the structural changes of an archetype nanoscale indium oxide materials and how these effects are manifest in reverse water gas shift heterogeneous catalytic reactivity. It is found that with increasing temperature and vacuum conditions, an irreversible surface lattice expansion is traced to the formation and migration of oxygen vacancies. Together, these changes are believed to be responsible for the decreased activation energy and improved reaction rate observed for the reverse water gas shift reaction. Studies of this kind provide new insight into how thermal energy affects thermochemical heterogeneous catalysis.

Yttrium-doped NiMo-MoO heterostructure electrocatalysts for hydrogen production from alkaline seawater.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, PR China.

Active and stable electrocatalysts are essential for hydrogen production from alkaline water electrolysis. However, precisely controlling the interaction between electrocatalysts and reaction intermediates (HO*, H*, and *OH) remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate an yttrium-doped NiMo-MoO heterogenous electrocatalyst that efficiently promotes water dissociation and accelerates the intermediate adsorption/desorption dynamics in alkaline electrolytes.

The present study focuses on the ground state mechanical, acoustic, thermodynamic and electronic transport properties of NaSbS polymorphs using the density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The mechanical stability of the polymorphs is affirmed by the calculated elastic tensor. The calculated elastic properties asserted that all the polymorphs exhibit soft, brittle, anisotropic nature containing dominant covalent bonding.

Improving the electronic properties of active cathode materials can significantly impact the design of rechargeable batteries. In this study, we investigated the influence of micro-strain on the structural and electronic properties of LiFePO (LFP) by performing combined core-level spectroscopy analysis and electrical conductivity measurements. High-resolution X-ray diffraction measurements, followed by Rietveld refinement analysis, revealed an increase in unit cell parameters due to the enhanced micro-strain in the lattice structure.

During the last decades, the use of innovative hybrid materials in energy storage devices has led to notable advances in the field. However, further enhancement of their electrochemical performance faces significant challenges nowadays, imposed by the materials used in the electrodes and the electrolyte. Such problems include the high solubility of both the organic and the inorganic anode components in the electrolyte as well as the limited intrinsic electronic conductivity and substantial volume variation of the materials during cycling.

Effect of Stress Aging on Strength, Toughness and Corrosion Resistance of Al-10Zn-3Mg-3Cu Alloy.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Shandong Zhuoyue Precision Industry Group Co., Ltd., Jining 272114, China.

The 7000 series aluminum alloy represented by Al-Zn-Mg-Cu has good strength and toughness and is widely used in the aerospace field. However, its high Zn content results in poor corrosion resistance, limiting its application in other fields. In order to achieve the synergistic improvement of both strength and corrosion resistance, this study examines the response of strength, toughness and corrosion resistance of a high-strength aluminum alloy tail frame under aging conditions with external stresses of 135 MPa, 270 MPa and 450 MPa.
