Ultralow decoration of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) (0.32 wt %) onto carbon spheres (CS) has been developed for hybrid formation, using hydrothermal heat treatment, followed by chemical reduction of nanoparticles. The successful decoration of CSs bearing amine groups with platinum nanoparticles was confirmed directly by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The uniform distribution and crystallinity of the Pt NPs in the hybrid structures were confirmed from X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The hydrogen evolution reaction studied on the proposed Pt-CS hybrids reveals an onset potential of only -144 mV (vs RHE, reversible hydrogen electrode) with a current density of 10 mA/cm under an acidic 0.5 M HSO medium, which exhibits a better performance as compared to a similar Pt-carbon hybrid catalyst reported in the literature. The Pt-CS hybrid stability assessments revealed a minimal overpotential loss (9 mV) from 144 to 153 mV after 200 cycles. Such hybrids have possible applications in environmental water purification and renewable energy production.

Hydrogen is increasingly acknowledged as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. However, the photothermal properties of CoFeS, a photocatalyst displaying metal-like behavior, have not been adequately explored in the context of photocatalytic H generation. To improve photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, it is crucial to understand how to expedite the transfer of photogenerated electrons and the dissociation of H-OH bonds for enhanced hydrogen ion release.

The development of suitable support to maximize the atomic utilization efficiency of platinum is of great significance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report a simple and fast nonequilibrium-corrosive approach to prepare oxygen defect-enriched FeO decorated with trace Pt onto nickel-iron foam (Pt/FeO-O/NIF). The Pt/FeO-O/NIF electrode is superhydrophilic with intimate contact with the electrolyte.

Amidst the escalating global energy crisis, the quest for efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting has become increasingly imperative. Herein, we develop a bifunctional electrocatalyst comprising RuNi alloy nanoparticles anchored on fluorine-doped NiMoO nanorods (RuNi-F-NiMoO), engineered for efficient hydrogen production from seawater and urea oxidation reactions. The strategic F doping effectively reduces the difference in work functions and modulates the electronic interactions between the RuNi alloy and the NiMoO substrate, enhancing electron transfer kinetics and significantly improving electrocatalytic activity and stability.

Metal oxide photocatalysts loaded with metal species are extremely important in photocatalysis. The physicochemical states of metal species, as well as the interaction between metal species and support, determine the transfer of charge carriers between the heterointerface, which has a significant impact on photocatalytic activity. Here, we prepared anatase TiO nanosheets (TIO) modified with different Ag species, including single atoms, clusters, and nanoparticles, using a ligand-mediated method.

Using organic oxidation reactions to replace the oxygen evolution reaction is a promising approach for producing high-value organic products and hydrogen. Here, we report a photoelectrochemical benzyl alcohol oxidation system based on an α-FeO photoanode coated with a NiCo-layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) cocatalyst. By adjustment of the relative content of Ni and Co in the NiCo-LDH, the optimized photoanode achieved a benzyl alcohol conversion efficiency of 99.
