AI Article Synopsis

  • Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps who also have asthma can struggle with surgery outcomes, particularly those with severe asthma.
  • A study tracked 83 patients through surgery, with follow-ups at 1 year and 12 years, revealing significant improvements in symptoms but high rates of polyp recurrence (67.6%) and revision surgery (31.0%).
  • Results indicated that severe asthma leads to worse outcomes, including higher recurrence rates and less improvement in symptoms after surgery compared to milder asthma cases.

Article Abstract

Background: Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps comorbid with asthma often experience poor outcomes following endoscopic sinus surgery.

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the impact of asthma severity on the long-term outcomes after surgery in these patients.

Methods: Eighty-three patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps comorbid with asthma who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were prospectively enrolled in this study. Patients were classified into mild, moderate, and severe asthma groups based on their preoperative asthma severity. Clinical symptom scores, nasal endoscopy scores, and asthma control test results were recorded preoperatively, and at 1 year and 12 years postoperatively.

Results: Seventy-one patients completed the 12-year follow-up. All patients showed significant improvement in nasal symptom scores and nasal endoscopy scores. However, 48 of 71 (67.6%) patients experienced nasal polyp recurrence, and 22 (31.0%) of them underwent revision surgery. Patients in the severe asthma group had the highest rate of nasal polyp recurrence (P=0.02) and revision surgery (P=0.01), and the least improvement in smell disturbance (P=0.04) and general symptom (P=0.02) compared with the other asthma groups.

Conclusion: Preoperative asthma severity significantly influenced the outcome of endoscopic sinus surgery in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps comorbid with asthma, in whom endoscopic sinus surgery had a long-term beneficial effect.

Objective: To assess the co-occurrence of incidental CT lung findings (emphysema, bronchiectasis, and airway wall thickening) as well as associated risk factors in low-dose CT (LDCT) lung cancer screening in a Chinese urban population.

Methods: Data from 978 participants aged 40-74 years from the Chinese NELCIN-B3 urban population study who underwent LDCT screening were selected. CT scans were reviewed for incidental lung findings: emphysema, bronchiectasis and airway wall thickness.

Pediatric asthma exacerbations represent a significant cause of emergency department use and hospitalizations. Despite available treatment options, many children's exacerbations are refractory to standard therapies and require adjunct treatments. The Intravenous Magnesium: Prompt use for Asthma in Children Treated in the Emergency Department study investigated the pharmacology of intravenous magnesium sulfate (IVMg) in treating pediatric asthma exacerbations.

Introduction: Allergic diseases are common clinical diseases. Although allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) and biologics have been widely recognized, the clinical efficacy, safety, advantages and disadvantages of the combined application have not yet been sufficiently recognized. We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of AIT combined with biologics in patients with allergic rhinitis and asthma.
