While zinc-ion and hybrid aqueous battery systems have emerged as potential substitutes for expensive lithium-ion batteries, issues like side reactions, limited electrochemical stability, and electrolyte leakage hinder their commercialization. Due to their low cost, high stability, minimal leakage risks, and a wide variety of modification opportunities, hydrogel electrolytes are considered the most promising solution compared to liquid or solid electrolytes. Here, we synthesized a dual-function hydrogel electrolyte based on polyacrylamide and poly(ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene (PPP).

Ni-rich layered oxides, particularly LiNiCoO, have garnered significant attention in the realm of high-capacity cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. Despite their promise, their commercialization is hindered by challenges related to structural instability and defect formation. This study utilizes density functional theory (DFT) to unravel the intricate structural, defect formation, and transport properties of LiNiCoO, thereby providing insights into the performance-limiting factors.

Background: Exposure to respirable dust (RES) and respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is common in mining operations and is associated with health effects such as pneumoconiosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, silicosis, lung cancer, and renal disease.
Methods: This study used industry occupational exposure data for respirable dust from two surface lithium mines in Western Australia for the period between 2017 and 2023. A total of 1122 samples were collected in workgroups across four departments - administration and support, mining, crushing and processing, and maintenance.

Brine mining can represent a valuable non-conventional resource for the extraction of Mg, Li, B, Sr and other Trace Elements (TEs) such as Rb, Cs, whose recoveries require chemical reagents such as alkaline and acidic solutions. In a circular strategy, these required chemicals can be produced in-situ through Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes (EDBM). In this work, a laboratory EDBM unit was operated using real brines from Trapani saltworks to investigate, for the first time, the migration of minor and trace ions, as Li, B, Sr, Cs and Rb through ion-exchange membranes (IEMs).
