Modulating gene expression as a strategy to investigate thyroid cancer biology.

Arch Endocrinol Metab

January 2025

Modulating the expression of a coding or noncoding gene is a key tool in scientific research. This strategy has evolved methodologically due to advances in cloning approaches, modeling/algorithms in short hairpin RNA (shRNA) design for knockdown efficiency, and biochemical modifications in RNA synthesis, among other developments. Overall, these modifications have improved the ways to either reduce or induce the expression of a given gene with efficiency and facility for implementation in the lab.

Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a common therapy for many hematologic malignancies. While advances in transplant practice have improved cancer-specific outcomes, multiple and debilitating long term physical and psychologic effects remain. Patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) are often critically ill at initial diagnosis and with necessary sequential treatments become increasingly frail and deconditioned.

Changes to social and healthcare providers support in the perinatal period: Impact on coping strategies, depression and anxiety.

Midwifery

January 2025

Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology. Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBIS), University of Seville, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: During the perinatal period, risk of depression and anxiety (D&A) increases. As in other crisis events, the COVID-19 pandemic, imposed social distancing measures, diminished social support and changes in perinatal healthcare provision which heightened this risk. This study aimed to examine how changes in social and healthcare provider support during the pandemic affected coping strategies and depression and anxiety symptoms (D&As) among perinatal women.

Ways to Measure Metals: From ICP-MS to XRF.

Curr Environ Health Rep

January 2025

School of Health Sciences, Purdue University, West-Lafayette, IN, 47906, USA.

Purpose Of Review: This review explores the use of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) for quantifying metals and metalloids in biological matrices such as hair, nails, blood, bone, and tissue. It provides a comprehensive overview of these methodologies, detailing their technological limitations, application scopes, and practical considerations for selection in both laboratory and field settings. By examining traditional and novel aspects of each method, this review aims to guide researchers and clinical practitioners in choosing the most suitable analytical tool based on their specific needs for sensitivity, precision, speed, and sample preparation.

Indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) is increasingly used along with scientific knowledge (SK) to understand climate change. The multi evidence base (MEB) offers ways of combining knowledge systems together. Nonetheless, there is little guidance on how to use MEB approaches in research.
