Long-term impact of congenital Zika virus infection on the rat hippocampus: Neuroinflammatory, glial alterations and sex-specific effects.

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is a condition that arises when a neonate presents with abnormalities resulting from Zika virus infection during gestation. While microcephaly is a prominent feature of the syndrome, other forms of brain damage are also observed, often accompanied by significant neurological complications. It is therefore essential to investigate the long-term effects of CZS, with special attention to sex differences, particularly concerning hippocampal function, given its vulnerability to viral infections.

Analysis of the distribution of mechanical load on the plate and lateral hinge of a valgus-producing open wedge high tibial osteotomy during weight-bearing by simulating consolidation. Finite element study.

Introduction: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is indicated for managing isolated medial knee osteoarthritis in a young patient with a metaphyseal deformity of the proximal tibia. In a medial open-wedge HTO, maintaining the integrity of the hinge is crucial for consolidation and preservation of the correction. Based on a validated model and preliminary results, the objective of this work was to measure and monitor the distribution of mechanical load on a locking fixation plate and the lateral hinge of an HTO using a finite element (FE) model during different phases of consolidation evolution, simulating single leg weightbearing.

A Novel Membrane-Associated Protein Aids Bacterial Colonization of Maize.

The soil environment affected by plant roots and their exudates, termed the rhizosphere, significantly impacts crop health and is an attractive target for engineering desirable agricultural traits. Engineering microbes in the rhizosphere is one approach to improving crop yields that directly minimizes the number of genetic modifications made to plants. Soil microbes have the potential to assist with nutrient acquisition, heat tolerance, and drought response if they can persist in the rhizosphere in the correct numbers.

Rapid and accurate diagnosis of sepsis is of paramount importance to reduce associated morbidity and mortality. The Qvella FAST System is a new instrument that concentrates and purifies bacteria from positive-flagged blood culture bottles (PFBCBs) to produce a "liquid" colony comparable to a subcultured colony in less than 40 min for rapid ID and calibrated antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST). In this study, we evaluated performances of the FAST System workflow and our rapid routine manual workflow (bacterial pellet obtained after lysis, cleaning, washing, and centrifugation for ID; AST by disc diffusion by direct inoculation after dilution) by comparison to the reference method based on 24-h bacterial subcultures.
