MXenes have excellent properties as electrode materials in energy storage devices or fuel cells. In bioelectrochemical systems (for wastewater treatment and energy harvesting), MXenes can have antimicrobial characteristics in some conditions. Here, different intercalation and delamination approaches to obtain TiCT MXene flakes with different terminal groups and lateral dimensions are comprehensively investigated. The effect of these properties on the energy harvesting performance from wastewater is then assessed. Regardless of the utilized intercalant molecules, MXene flakes obtained using soft delamination approaches are much larger (up to 10 µm) than those obtained using mechanical delamination methods (<1.5 nm), with a relatively higher content of ─O/─OH surface terminations. When employed in microbial fuel cells, electrodes made of these large MXene flakes have demonstrated a power density of over 400% higher than smaller MXene flakes, thanks to their lower charge transfer resistance (0.38 Ω). These findings highlight the crucial role of selecting appropriate intercalation and delamination methods when synthesizing MXenes for bioelectrochemical applications.

Extensive research on ultrashort laser-induced melting of noble metals like Au, Ag and Cu is available. However, studies on laser energy deposition and thermal damage of their alloys, which are currently attracting interest for energy harvesting and storage devices, are limited. This study investigates the melting damage threshold (DT) of three intermetallic alloys of Au and Cu (AuCu, AuCu and AuCu) subjected to single-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation, comparing them with their constituent metals.

Organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric compounds of the halobismuthate family have emerged as a focal point of research owing to their reduced toxicity and distinctive optical characteristics. This study presents a novel ammonium hybrid perovskite, [BPMBDMA]·[Bi2Br9], which exhibits both ferro- and piezoelectric properties and crystallizes in the polar noncentrosymmetric 2 space group. The nonlinear optical (NLO) activity of [BPMBDMA]·[Bi2Br9] was corroborated through second harmonic generation measurements evidencing its noncentrosymmetric structure, which was further substantiated by piezoresponse force microscopy analyses.

Chlorophyll (Chl) is the most abundant light-harvesting pigment of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms; however, the Q-band energetics and relaxation dynamics remain unclear. In this work, we have applied femtosecond time-resolved (-TA) absorption spectroscopy in 430-1,700 nm to Chls and in diluted pyridine solutions under selective optical excitation within their Q-bands. The results revealed distinct near-infrared absorption features of the B ← Q and B ← Q transitions in 930-1,700 nm, which together with the steady-state absorption in 400-700 nm unveiled the Q-state energy that lies 1,000 ± 400 and 600 ± 400 cm above the Q-state for Chls and , respectively.

Porous piezoelectric materials have attracted much interest in the fields of sensing and energy harvesting owing to their low dielectric constant, high piezoelectric voltage coefficient, and energy harvesting figure of merit. However, the introduction of porosity can decrease the piezoelectric coefficient, which restricts the enhancement of output current and power density. Herein, to overcome these challenges, an array-structured piezoelectric composite energy harvester with aligned porosity was constructed via a dual structure design strategy to enhance the output current and power density.

Hot-exciton materials, among all kinds of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters, have better exciton utilization efficiency and efficiency roll-off, making them possible for their practical applications. We studied the photophysical properties of a few hot-exciton molecules based on an anthracene core unit to efficiently harvest all triplet excitons to the lowest excited singlet state. The conversion of triplet exciton to singlet exciton utilizing hRISC can be enhanced due to the 1ππ*←3nπ* transition channel.
