AI Article Synopsis

  • - Engineered protein cages are being studied for their potential uses in delivery systems and chemical reactions.
  • - The text discusses how a specific design called a β-propeller can create icosahedral cages when triggered by macrocycles.
  • - Techniques like small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray crystallography were used to confirm the formation of these cages.

Article Abstract

Engineered protein cages are of great interest considering their diverse applications in delivery and catalysis. Here, we describe macrocycle-triggered icosahedral cage assembly of a designed β-propeller. Cage assembly was evidenced by small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray crystallography.

Intensified host-guest electronic interplay within stable metal-organic cages (MOCs) presents great opportunities for applications in stimuli response and photocatalysis. Zr-MOCs represent a type of robust discrete hosts for such a design, but their host-guest chemistry in solution is hampered by the limited solubility. Here, by using pyridinium-derived cationic ligands with tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate (BAr) as solubilizing counteranions, we report the preparation of soluble Zr-MOCs of different shapes (1-4) that are otherwise inaccessible through a conventional method.

We introduce our proprietary Materials Informatics (MI) technologies and our chemistry-oriented methodology for exploring new inorganic functional materials. Using machine learning on crystal structure databases, we developed 'Element Reactivity Maps' that displays the presence or the predicted formation probability of compounds for combinations of 80 × 80 × 80 elements. By analysing atomic coordinates with Delaunay tetrahedral decomposition, we established the concept of Delaunay Chemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • The sterile insect technique (SIT) is an eco-friendly method used for controlling pest populations, highlighting the importance of identifying genes that regulate insect fertility.
  • Researchers discovered seven TEKT genes in the fruit pest Cydia pomonella, with TEKT4L showing the highest expression in male testes, indicating its key role in reproduction.
  • Using CRISPR/Cas9, they knocked out TEKT4L, inducing male sterility and significantly reducing the hatching rates of offspring, which ultimately proved effective in controlling C.pomonella populations in cage trials.

Ferritins are ubiquitous and play a critical role in iron homeostasis. They are classified into four main subfamilies: classical, bacterial, bacterioferritin, and Dps. These are characterized by subunits with a four-helical bundle domain and interact through three distinct regions-one antiparallel interface (IntA) and two perpendicular interfaces (IntB and IntC), collectively forming a cage-like structure.

Human rhinoviruses (RV) are among the most frequent human pathogens. As major causative agents of common colds they originate serious socioeconomic problems and huge expenditure every year, and they also exacerbate severe respiratory diseases. No anti-rhinoviral drugs or vaccines are available so far.
