In developing countries, vehicle emissions are a major source of atmospheric pollution, worsened by aging vehicle fleets and less stringent emissions regulations. This results in elevated levels of particulate matter, contributing to the degradation of urban air quality and increasing concerns over the broader effects of atmospheric emissions on human health. This study proposes a Hybrid Explainable Boosting Machine (EBM) framework, optimized using the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES), to predict vehicle-related PM concentrations and analyze contributing factors. Air quality data were collected from Open-Seneca sensors installed along the Nairobi Expressway, alongside meteorological and traffic data. The CMA-ES-tuned EBM model achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 2.033 and an R of 0.843, outperforming other models. A key strength of the EBM is its interpretability, revealing that the location was the most critical factor influencing PM concentrations, followed by humidity and temperature. Elevated PM levels were observed near the Westlands roundabout, and medium to high humidity correlated with higher PM levels. Furthermore, the interaction between humidity and traffic volume played a significant role in determining PM concentrations. By combining CMA-ES for hyperparameter optimization and EBM for prediction and interpretation, this study provides both high predictive accuracy and valuable insights into the environmental drivers of urban air pollution, providing practical guidance for air quality management.

Background: No prior study has examined the mutual association of long-term outdoor ozone (O) concentration and physical activity (PA) with emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) in children and adolescents. This study aims to investigate the association between long-term outdoor O concentration and the risk of EBPs in children and adolescents and further explore whether increased PA levels modify this association.
Methods: Data were obtained from the 2020 wave follow-up examination of an ongoing prospective cohort study (COHERENCE project) in Guangzhou, China.

Poor management of nitrogen (N) can lead to serious environmental problems, such as air and water pollution. The accurate identification of priority control areas and emission sources is critical for making effective decisions regarding sustainable N management. This study aimed to identify hotspots for N losses and quantitatively analyze the relative contributions of different emission sources in the Huang-Huai-Hai Basin at the county scale.

Background: Evidence is limited regarding the role of air pollution in acute lower respiratory infections among adults. We assessed the influence of long-term air pollution exposure on hospital admission for lower respiratory infections and whether there are vulnerable subgroups.
Methods: We used a populational cohort in Catalonia, Spain, comprising 3,817,820 adults residing in Catalonia as of January 1, 2015.

Background: Although there is increasing evidence that environmental exposures are associated with the risk of neurodegenerative conditions, there is still limited mechanistic evidence evaluating potential mediators in human populations.
Methods: UK Biobank is a large long-term study of 500,000 adults enrolled from 2006 to 2010 age 40-69 years. ICD-10 classified reports of dementia cases up to 2022 (Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, dementia in other classified diseases, and unspecified dementia) were identified from health record linkage.

The digital economy has significantly enhanced economic quality, and studying its implications on the environment can provide empirical support for policies that foster environment-economy coordination. This paper examines the impact of digital infrastructure on air quality, focusing on the mechanisms of public environmental attention and industrial development. It further analyzes heterogeneity in urban locations, degree of urbanization, and environmental regulation intensity.
