This retrospective in vivo study evaluated the trueness and precision of two digital intraoral scanners-Dentsply Sirona Primescan and Medit i900-, both with and without two variants of the novel Scan Ladder aids, and compared their performance to a new intraoral photogrammetry scanner (Shining 3D Elite). Data from ten edentulous patients, previously collected during routine clinical treatment, were analyzed using a master STL generated from traditional impression casts as the reference. A custom positional change calculator and comprehensive statistical analysis were used to assess scanner accuracy. The findings demonstrated that the use of the Scan Ladder significantly enhanced the overall accuracy of both intraoral scanners, showing no statistically significant differences when compared to the intraoral photogrammetry system. These results indicate that the Scan Ladder improves the performance of conventional intraoral scanners and suggests that the Shining 3D Elite intraoral photogrammetry scanner is a reliable alternative to extraoral photogrammetry for edentulous cases. Further research, with a larger and more diverse cohort, is warranted to validate and expand upon these findings.

Atraumatic bilateral femoral neck fractures are rare, especially in younger patients and those without significant comorbidities. However, pregnant individuals appear to be at increased risk due to normal physiological changes in calcium balance, leading to transient osteoporosis of the hip. In these individuals, calcium and bone mineral density are generally decreased, reflecting the calcium demands of the developing fetus.

Climbing the ladder of density functional approximations has long been proposed to systematically improve the accuracy of first-principles calculations employing the density functional theory (DFT); however, up until now, the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional at the second rung of the ladder, has dominated. Here, we present a study of the martensitic phase transition in NiTi based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and thermodynamic integration using the third-rung approximation of the strongly constrained and appropriately normalized (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Although the predicted equilibrium lattice constants and formation enthalpy agree well with experimental data, the martensitic transition temperature (MTT) is overestimated by 94% (or 324 K too high), compared with only 22% (77 K) overestimation by PBE.

Periorbital emphysema is rare and associated with facial trauma. Its main distinguishing feature is crepitation on palpation of the edema. It resolves spontaneously in a few days, but there are cases of orbital compartment syndrome that can lead to loss of vision.

A woman in her 80s was taken to the hospital after falling off a ladder and underwent a contrast-enhanced CT scan, which revealed disruption of the contrast effect in the right internal jugular vein, with multiple rib fractures and haemopneumothorax. Following reduction of the subcutaneous emphysema with treatment, the diameter of her right internal jugular vein enlarged over time, becoming equal to that on the contralateral side. It is important to diagnose compression of the internal jugular vein due to subcutaneous emphysema, because the treatment strategy varies according to the aetiology.
