We have successfully synthesized unique linear-chain and discrete mixed-valence tetrameric complexes, {[Rh(3,6-DBDiox-4,5-SCO)(CO)]·hexane} () and [Rh(3,6-DBDiox-4,5-SCO)(CO)] (), by carefully choosing the solvent. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) confirm that and are in the Rh(I,II) mixed-valence state. Analyses of the metrical oxidation state (MOS) of dioxolene ligands reveal that in and , the electron density corresponding to one electron per tetramer is transferred from Rh(I) ions to semiquinonato ligands, and the transferred charge is delocalized throughout the four dioxolene ligands. Due to their mixed-valence state, and are semiconductors with relatively high electrical conductivity at room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of tetrameric complex demonstrated for the first time that the dσ* orbitals of the Rh atoms and the π* orbitals of the semiquinonato ligands, which are originally highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), respectively, strongly hybridize with each other, leading to the Rh(I,II)-semiquinonato/catecholato mixed-valence state. Furthermore, time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations have also revealed that the low energy absorption band observed centered at 5700 cm is attributed to a charge transfer from [dσ*(Rh)] (HOMO) or [π*(SQ)-dσ*(Rh)] (HOMO-1) to [π*(SQ)-dσ*(Rh)] (LUMO/LUMO+1). Although and are tetramers with nearly identical structures, their magnetic interactions are found to differ significantly depending on their crystal structures.

Metal synergy can enhance the catalytic performance, and a prefabricated solid precursor can guide the ordered embedding, of secondary metal source ions for the rapid synthesis of bimetallic organic frameworks (MM'-MOFs) with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. In this paper, containing well-defined binding sites was synthesized by mechanical ball milling, which was used as a template for the induced introduction of Fe ions to successfully assemble the ordered bimetallic (where denotes template-directed synthesis of MOF-74). Its electrocatalytic performance is superior to that of the conventional one-step-synthesized (where denotes one-step synthesis of MOF-74), and the ratio of the two metal sources, Co and Fe, is close to 1:1.

Food freshness monitoring and volatile amine detection are key to food safety. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of mixed-valence rhenium oxide quantum dots (MV-ReOQDs), synthesized via the hydrothermal reaction of α-cyclodextrin and rhenium ion precursors, in triethylamine (TEA) sensing. Spectroscopic correlation techniques showed that the developed MV-ReOQDs possessed mixed-valent rhenium, α-cyclodextrin as capped ligand, partially carbonized surface, and amorphous phase structure.

In this study, we used meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) as an organic ligand to modify a lanthanide-based metal-organic framework as an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) platform to sensitively detect anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). La-MOF amplified the ECL signal by suppressing the aggregation-caused quenching created by TCPP self-aggregation. Utilizing the reversible cycling of the mixed-valence transition metal ion (Cu/Cu and Mo/Mo) and the electrical conductivity of CuMoS and silver nanoparticle (AgNP), CuMoS-AgNP as a dual co-reaction promoter constantly generated sulfate radical anions (SO) and thus amplified the ECL signal.

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) can effectively improve the performance of electrochemical detection due to their unique electronic structure and redox properties. However, the lack of reproducibility and the electrical activity of TMOs prepared from conventional preparation methods limit their further development. In this work, amorphous MoO with reductive Mo(V) was successfully synthesized by one-step electrodeposition, and it has excellent detection performance for p-nitrophenol (PNP).
