AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to determine if a dilatation of the common bile duct (CBD) can be seen in postmortem CT scans of individuals who died from opiate/opioid intoxication and if this dilatation can also be measured for other drug groups.* -
  • Researchers analyzed 125 cases of lethal intoxication using postmortem CT and compared them to 88 control cases without toxic substances, finding a significant difference in CBD diameters between the intoxication group and controls.* -
  • The results showed that only opiate and opioid cases had a significantly wider CBD, suggesting dilatation may indicate lethal opioid intoxication, but this should be considered alongside other evidence in postmortem investigations.*

Article Abstract

Purpose: To assess (I) whether, in autopsy-proven lethal intoxications with opiates/opioids, a dilatation of the common bile duct (CBD) is still visible in postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) and (II) if a dilatation of the CBD might also be measurable for other substance groups (e.g., stimulants, hypnotics, antipsychotics, etc.).

Methods: We retrospectively measured the CBD using PMCT in cases with lethal intoxication ( = 125) and as a control group in cases with a negative toxicological analysis ( = 88). Intoxicating substances were classified into the subgroups (opiates, opioids, stimulants, hypnotics, antipsychotics, gasses, and others). Significance between the study and control groups was tested with the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlations were examined by using crosstables.

Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the CBD diameters in the intoxication group overall, when compared to the CBD diameter in the control group ( < 0.001). For both subgroups of "opiates" and "opioids", there was a strong statistically significant difference between the CBD diameter (being wider) in those groups compared to the control group (both = 0.001). For the three subgroups "hypnotics", "stimulants", and "psychotropic drugs", there was no statistically significant difference between the CBD diameters in the intoxication subgroups when compared with the control group. The other subgroups were too small for statistical analysis.

Conclusion: A dilated common bile duct in postmortem computed tomography might be used as an indication for a lethal opioid or opiate intoxication only in regard to the specific case circumstances or together with other indicative findings in a postmortem investigation.

Boldine reduces left ventricle oxidative stress in isoproterenol-induced adrenergic overload experimental model.

Arch Physiol Biochem

December 2024

Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil.

Sustained adrenergic overload in the heart causes maladaptive cardiac remodelling, which involves oxidative stress. Boldine (BOL) has antioxidant activity and represents a novel therapeutic approach. This study explored the cardioprotective role of BOL in adverse left ventricular remodelling induced by isoproterenol.

Plasma nitriding is one of the surface modifications that show more effectiveness than other methods. In this study, the plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) technique was performed on the surface of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V, Ti64) using a mixture of nitrogen (N) and argon (Ar), resulting in a plasma-nitrided surface (TiN-Ti64). The surface composition of the TiN-Ti64 was verified through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Background: Whereas restoration of fecal consistency after treatment with clioquinol for chronic diarrhea and free fecal water syndrome has been attributed to its antiprotozoal properties, actions of clioquinol on the colonic bacterial microbiota have not been investigated.

Objectives: Characterize the dynamics of fecal microbial diversity before, during, and after PO administration of clioquinol to healthy horses.

Study Design: Experimental prospective cohort study using a single horse group.

Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) as a valuable inflammatory cytokine for estimation of the efficacy of adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in stage II-IV periodontitis patients.

Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statements, and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022321211). An electronic search was conducted for articles comparing the efficacy of aPDT versus scaling and root planing (SRP) published up until June 2023.
