The effects of prednisolone was investigated on the foetotoxicity of cadmium. CFLP female mice were given a single i.p. dose of 2.5 mg cadmium (Cd) per kg body weight on day 5 or 9 of gestation. This treatment significantly decreased both the number of live foetuses and foetal weights on day 18 of gestation. Prednisolone (0.1 mg kg-1) given daily from the day of cadmium treatment death, prevented the effects of cadmium on foetal weights in both groups, and on the number of live foetuses when cadmium was given on day 9 of gestation. When Cd was given on day 13 of gestation similar treatment with prednisolone did not influence either litter size or the weights of 1-day-old pups.

Purpose: Observational studies have suggested negative associations between maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) status and risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy [pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and preeclampsia (PET)]. Data from intervention studies are limited. We hypothesised that vitamin D supplementation would lower maternal blood pressure (BP) during pregnancy and reduce the incidence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

An unusual case of small bowel obstruction (SBO) due to haemostatic gelatin sponge placed during caesarean delivery is presented. A primigravida in their 30s underwent caesarean delivery at 39 weeks, and developed symptoms of SBO from the second postoperative day. Given the worsening condition of the patient and increasing abdominal girth, CT of the abdomen and pelvis was done which revealed features of SBO.

Background: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) plays a crucial role in the maturation the neonatal mucosal barrier. The accumulation of IgA antibody-secreting cells (ASCs) in the lactating mammary gland facilitates the secretion of IgA antibodies into milk, which are then passively to the suckling newborn, providing transient immune protection against gastrointestinal pathogens. Physiologically, full-term infants are unable to produce IgA, required for mucosal barrier maturation for at least 10 days after birth.
