The preparation of nanomaterials employing ionic liquids (ILs) and surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) in a relatively sustainable manner for different applications is reviewed. ILs offer structure directing and templating effects inherent bi-continuous structures formed by the segregation of polar and non-polar domains. On the other hand, SAILs offer a structure-directing effect governed by their ability to lower the surface tension, self-assembling nature and interaction with precursors ionic head groups. Binary mixtures of ILs with other relatively greener solvents or utilization of metal-based ILs (MILs), which act as precursors of metal ions, templates and stabilizing agents propose a new way to prepare a variety of nanomaterials. The introduction of SAILs that exfoliate 2D materials under low-energy bath sonication and also aid in photoreduction and stabilization of photocatalytically active nanomaterials at the surface of 2D materials poses a distinctive perspective in sustainable preparation and utilization of nanomaterials in different photocatalytic applications. The present feature article reviews the employment of distinctive properties of ILs in precise morphological control of nanomaterials, and their after-effects on their catalytic efficiencies.

In this study, physicochemical and structural properties of gelatin-zein blending films and bilayer films prepared through blending and layer-by-layer self-assembly method under TGase crosslinking were systematically compared. The ratios of gelatin to zein examined were 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2. Results showed that the tensile strength of both blending films and bilayer films was the highest when the ratio of gelatin to zein was 2:1, which was 4.

Tannic acid (TA) has attracted the attention of researchers as a promising organic ligand capable of forming metal-organic coordination networks with various metal ions at interfaces to impact surface properties. In this study, we innovatively reported a self-assembly method for surface decoration by depositing TA/Fe coatings on the surface of desalted duck egg white nanoparticles (DEWN), further studying the oil/water interfacial properties of the modified particles. The results showed that the ratio and concentration of TA to Fe could modulate interfacial properties.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and serve as effective antimicrobial agents against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, agricultural waste corn straw was used as the raw material to obtain cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) through enzymatic hydrolysis. The hydrolysate was employed as reducing agents to synthesize CNC-AgNPs.

Integrating electrospun aligned fiber scaffolds with bovine serum albumin-basic fibroblast growth factor nanoparticles to promote tendon regeneration.

State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, 100029, China.

Background: Electrospun nanofiber scaffolds have been widely used in tissue engineering because they can mimic extracellular matrix-like structures and offer advantages including high porosity, large specific surface area, and customizable structure. In this study, we prepared scaffolds composed of aligned and random electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers capable of delivering basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in a sustained manner for repairing damaged tendons.

Results: Aligned and random PCL fiber scaffolds containing bFGF-loaded bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles (BSA-bFGF NPs, diameter 146 ± 32 nm) were fabricated, respectively.
