We propose a method to improve the performance of N × N(N⩾3) multimode interference couplers (MMIs) by suppressing propagation constant errors through controlling excited guided modes and the width of MMI, without increasing their fabrication complexity. 5 × 5 MMIs were fabricated on a commercial 220-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform to verify the method. Measurement results show that insertion losses (ILs) and imbalances (Ims) are reduced from 2.28 dB to 0.16 dB and from 6.94 dB to 0.33 dB, respectively.

Background: The TMEM106B protein is critical for proper functioning of the endolysomal system, which is utilised by all cells to traffic and degrade molecular cargo. Genome-wide association studies identified a haplotype in the TMEM106B gene that is associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TAR DNA binding protein inclusions (FTLD-TDP). However, the causal variant that drives the association has thus far remained elusive.

The Endosomal Sorting Complexes Required for Transport (ESCRT) machinery is responsible for the biogenesis of small EVs (exosomes), thus targeting critical ESCRT molecules can disrupt EV synthesis. We hypothesize that microglia-specific targeting of ESCRT-I molecule Tsg101 suppresses microglia-derived EV-mediated propagation of tau pathology, leading to amelioration of the disease phenotype of the tauopathy mouse model.

The detection of molecular patterns associated with invading pathogens is a hallmark of innate immune systems. Prokaryotes deploy sophisticated host defense mechanisms in innate anti-phage immunity. Shedu is a single-component defense system comprising a putative nuclease SduA.

Understanding the early interactions between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and human airway epithelial cells is essential for unraveling viral replication and spread mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the early dynamics of airway epithelial cells during SARS-CoV-2 infection using well-differentiated human nasal and tracheal epithelial cell cultures by incorporating three publicly available single-cell RNA sequencing datasets. We identified a previously uncharacterized cell population, termed virus-rich intermediate (VRI) cells, representing an intermediate differentiation stage between basal and ciliated cells.

The collection of active agents often exhibits intriguing statistical and dynamical properties, particularly when considering human crowds. In this study, we have developed a computational model to simulate the recent experiment on real marathon races by Bain et al. (Science 363:46-49, 2019).
