Perceptions of physical attractiveness are typically assessed using numeric rating scales. As with other visceral experiences, perceptions of physical attractiveness may benefit from multimodal measurement. Recently, we developed and validated a squeeze (dynamometer) method to evaluate two "visceral" states (hunger and cigarette craving). Here, we extend this approach to perceptions of physical attractiveness. Participants (n = 33) viewed a series of static facial images. Perceptions of physical attractiveness were assessed using the dynamometer, followed by a traditional rating scale ranging from 1 (very unattractive) to 10 (very attractive). Participants also reported desire to (a) interact with each individual they viewed in a future study and (b) become friends with each individual they viewed, using a Likert scale. Dynamometer-measured perceptions of physical attractiveness were significantly associated with traditional perceptions of physical attractiveness ratings and predicted both desire outcomes. Findings offer initial support for a visceral approach to perceptions of physical attractiveness that can complement traditional rating scales.

Conjugated polymers have attracted extensive attention as semiconducting materials in wearable and flexible electronics. In this study, we utilize atom-economical Knoevenagel reaction to construct two conjugated polymers, PTDPP-CNTT and PFDPP-CNTT, based on dialdehyde-thiophene/furan-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and 2,2'-(thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diyl)diacetonitrile (CNTT). The resulting polymers exhibited suitable highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO/LUMO) energy levels, small bandgaps, and broad UV-vis-NIR absorptions (≈400-1000 nm), endowing them with photothermal and balanced ambipolar semiconducting properties with hole and electron mobilities over 10 cmVs.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have attracted enormous attention owing to their intriguing structural tunability and diverse functional properties. Reconstructive phase transitions, involving the breaking and reconstruction of chemical bonds, have rarely been found in such materials; however, these features may induce many intriguing physical properties in optics, ferroelectrics, ferromagnetics, and so forth. Here, we utilized the weak and switchable coordination bonds of HETMA-MnCl (HETMA = (2-hydroxyethyl) trimethylammonium) to construct a 1D hybrid perovskite employing a neutral framework.

Microgreens of Brassica plants have attracted increasing research interest in the management of the prevailing epidemic of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) because of their high nutritional value. This study evaluated the antidiabetic effects of Microgreens Ethanolic Extract (BMEE) in type-2 diabetic rats. For the normoglycemic assay, rats were divided into five groups and received a single oral dose of 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg of BMEE while the control groups received distilled water and Glibenclamide.

Lanthanide materials with a 4f electron configuration (S) offer an exciting system for realizing multiple addressable spin states for qubit design. While the S ground state of 4f free ions displays an isotropic character, breaking degeneracy of this ground state and excited states can be achieved through local symmetry of the lanthanide and the choice of ligands. This makes Eu attractive as it mirrors Gd in exhibiting the S ground state, capable of seven spin-allowed transitions.

Carbon dots (CDs) are promising candidates as oxygen photosensitizers, in cancer therapeutic applications due to their high quantum yield, superior chemical and photostability, low cytotoxicity and ease of chemical functionalization/tuning. Nitrogen doping can further improve oxygen photosensitization performance. Besides photodynamic therapy, however, the possibility to finely and remotely regulate the intracellular redox balance by using physical stimuli has been attracting more and more interest not only for nanotheranostic application, but also as a novel, fully biocompatible therapeutic tool.
