A two-step formal (4 + 1) annulation-dehydration reaction offers a convenient route to C2-arylated indoles and benzofurans. This reaction exploits the bifunctional reactivity of electron-deficient benzyl chlorides with -sulfonyl-2-aminobenzaldehydes or salicylaldehyde derivatives. The reaction tolerates both electron-withdrawing and donating groups on the substituted aldehydes, as well as variation of electron-withdrawing groups at the position of the benzyl chloride reagent. This work also identifies interesting byproducts resulting from the self-reaction of these benzyl chlorides under basic conditions.

Phosphorus (P) fertilizer is an essential component of our food system with the majority of all mined P rock processed to make mineral fertilizers. Globally however P rock stocks are declining-both in quality and quantity-with poor P management creating a linear economic system where P is mined, globally redistributed into products and eventually discharged into the environment leading to eutrophication. To enable establishment of a circular P economy, whereby P can be recovered from waste for its industrial reuse, requires the development of effective P recovery technologies.

In this paper, two triazine ring-containing quaternary ammonium salt Gemini surfactants (C-2-C and C-2-C) were synthesized. The minimum inhibitory concentrations against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) of C-2-C, C-2-C and dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (1227) were determined using the double-dilution method. The performance of C-2-C and C-2-C in inhibiting carbon steel corrosion in the presence of SRB was examined, with 1227 serving as a control sample.

Objective: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on neurological function in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) by regulating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/Unc-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) signaling pathway.
Methods: Thirty-three male SD rats were randomly divided into a sham-operation group, a model group and an EA group, with 11 rats in each group. The right middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) model was prepared by thread occlusion method in the model group and the EA group.

Carbon dioxide (CO) is an abundant and useful C feedstock for electrocarboxylation, a process that incorporates a carboxyl moiety into an organic molecule. In this work, three first-row transition metal CO reduction electrocatalysts, NiPDI (), NiTPA (), and Fe(salenCl) (), were explored as electrocarboxylation catalysts with benzyl chloride as a substrate. The cyclic voltammograms of all three catalysts showed current enhancements in the presence of benzyl chloride under a CO atmosphere.
