Because bats emit ultrasound and listen to echoes to perceive their surroundings, presenting phantom echoes is useful for understanding their perception of echolocation. Here, we present a protocol for the real-time playback of phantom echoes, especially from approaching objects. We describe steps for presenting virtual objects using a microphone, digital signal processor, and loudspeaker to induce the escape behavior of bats. We then detail procedures for clarifying their detection algorithm for approaching objects. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Yoshida et al..

Double-quantum filtered Na NMR experiments with one or two "magic angle" (54.7°) pulses in the filter step are widely used for selective observation of sodium ions that are interacting with ordered biological structures ("ordered sodium") and hence exhibit a distribution of quadrupolar splittings in their NMR spectrum. This approach has recently been extended to Na MRI where the conventional experiment has been modified, omitting the 180° pulse to reduce the absorption of radiofrequency energy during human studies.

Conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences employing a spin echo or stimulated echo sensitize diffusion with a specific b-value at a fixed diffusion direction and diffusion time (Δ). To compute apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and other diffusion parameters, the sequence needs to be repeated multiple times by varying the b-value and/or gradient direction. In this study, we developed a single-shot multi-b-value (SSMb) diffusion MRI technique, which combines a spin echo and a train of stimulated echoes produced with variable flip angles.

Purpose: Fresh blood imaging (FBI) utilizes physiological blood signal differences between diastole and systole, causing a long acquisition time. The purpose of this study is to develop a fast FBI technique using a centric k - k k-space trajectory (cFBI) and an exponential refocusing flip angle (eFA) scheme with fast longitudinal restoration.
Methods: This study was performed on 8 healthy subjects and 2 patients (peripheral artery disease and vascular disease) with informed consent, using a clinical 3-Tesla MRI scanner.
