Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and surface-assisted laser desorption ionization (SALDI) mass spectrometry (MS), which can detect biomolecules and polymers, are widely used in biochemistry and material science. Some compounds that are difficult to ionize using MALDI can be ionized using SALDI. However, it is difficult to obtain high ion yields using SALDI/MS. In this study, a fabricated platinum (Pt) film with nanostructures on the sample surface using a sputtering method was evaluated to determine the optimal metal film for ion yield in SALDI. The surface morphology of the Pt film was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy. The SEM, AFM, and TEM images of the Pt film showed the deposited metal film giving high ion yields of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in SALDI/MS with a Pt film (Pt-SALDI) that had a rough surface. The densities and reflectivity of films were analyzed by XRR and UV-Vis-NIR. The higher ion yields of PEG were obtained by Pt-SALDI with the Pt films with lower densities and reflectivity. This indicates that the deposition conditions for the Pt films significantly improved the ion yield in Pt-SALDI/MS. The Pt-SALDI has ionization capabilities different from those of MALDI. Therefore, optimization of Pt film for SALDI/MS and the MS imaging allows more compounds to be detected with higher sensitivity.

A cationic N-heterocyclic phosphenium (NHP) iron tetracarbonyl complex was synthesised from the free cation and its behaviour towards various anionic reactants studied. Reactions with fluoride, chloride, and hydride sources proceeded under attachment of the anion at phosphorus to yield Fe(CO)-complexes of neutral diazaphospholenes, while bromide and iodide reacted under addition of the anion at the metal and decarbonylation to yield NHP iron halides. Reactions with amides and organometallics were unselective.

New tetrakis Eu and Gd β-diketonate complexes containing benzimidazolium (Bzim) as the counterion were synthesized by the one-pot method. The Bzim[Eu(tta)]·HO complex was further incorporated into a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix (PMMA) at 1, 5, and 10% (w/w), which revealed highly desirable photonic features. The Eu and Gd complexes were characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, in addition to ESI-MS spectrometry, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy.

A downstream process for the recovery and purification of acetic acid (AA) from an extremely diluted solution (100 mg L) also containing a mixture of contaminating inorganic salts in the form of bicarbonates, phosphates, sulfates and chlorides (DPM medium) has been developed, showing its technical feasibility. The process involves two successive steps based on the use of a mixed bed ion exchange (IEX) resin. The first step, a demineralization treatment to remove the inorganic anions that could potentially interfere with the recovery and purification of AA, involves a combined treatment of calcium precipitation, acidification with the Amberlite IR-120 resin and treatment with the Amberlite MB20 mixed bed resin.

The C chemical species, potassium formate (K(HCO)), known as a two-electron reducing agent, finds application in the synthesis of multi-carbon compounds, including oxalate, and plays a crucial role not only in the food and pharmaceutical industries but also across various sectors. However, the direct hydrogenation of CO to produce K(HCO) remains a challenge. Addressing this issue, efficient production of K(HCO) is achieved by integrating CO hydrogenation in a trickle-bed reactor using a heterogeneous catalyst with a novel separation method that utilizes potassium ions from biomass ash for formic acid derivative product isolation.

Unlabelled: This research aimed to assess the biological characteristics of both submerged culture mycelium and artificial basidioma of NTH-PL4. The extraction yield from the basidioma surpassed that of the mycelium. The use of hot water extract resulted in the highest total carbohydrate content, predominantly found in the basidioma.
