Graduate anatomy courses should be designed based on several needs. These include preparation for how to study in medical school and other healthcare programs, integrating multiple ways of engaging with the material, including repetition for long-term retention, and training of anatomy educators. Our graduate anatomy course presents an example of a balanced course structure that caters to the varying needs of different learners and encourages interest in anatomy education as a profession. By refocusing graduate gross anatomy training, we aim to support learners pursuing fields that utilize anatomy, including healthcare professions as well as future content experts to address the shortage of qualified anatomy educators.

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography based on tandem interferometry with a focus-tunable lens.

Biomed Opt Express

September 2024

Université Paris-Saclay, Institut d'Optique Graduate School , Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Laboratoire Charles Fabry, 91127 Palaiseau, France.

This article introduces an innovative line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) system based on tandem interferometry, featuring a focus-tunable lens for dynamic focusing. The principle of tandem interferometry is first recalled, and an analytical expression of the interferometric signal detected is established in order to identify the influence of key experimental parameters. The LC-OCT system is based on a Linnik-type imaging interferometer with a focus-tunable lens for focus scanning, coupled to a Michelson-type compensating interferometer using a piezoelectric linear translation stage for coherence plane scanning.

Purpose: The pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyloid, tau, and associated neurodegeneration, are present in the cortical gray matter (GM) years before symptom onset, and at significantly greater levels in carriers of the apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) allele. Their respective biomarkers, A/T/N, have been found to correlate with aspects of brain biochemistry, measured with magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), indicating a potential for MRS to augment the A/T/N framework for staging and prediction of AD. Unfortunately, the relationships between MRS and A/T/N biomarkers are unclear, largely due to a lack of studies examining them in the context of the spatial and temporal model of T/N progression.

Medical students must have robust educational experiences, graduate and commence timely employment. Here, we describe how the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) delivered clinical placements in medical programmes over the first three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland, including a student-centred, holistic approach to students' educational, social and health needs with strong student involvement, re-organising the university's primary care team, developing COVID-19 PCR testing on site and re-focusing communications and student services. This resulted in re-arranging the students into learning communities, and students and staff electronically recorded their COVID-19 symptom status daily.

A pharmacokinetic model for hyperpolarized C-pyruvate MRI when using metabolite-specific bSSFP sequences.

Magn Reson Med

October 2024

UC Berkeley-UCSF Graduate Program in Bioengineering, University of California, Berkeley and University of California, San Francisco, California, USA.

Purpose: Metabolite-specific balanced SSFP (MS-bSSFP) sequences are increasingly used in hyperpolarized [1-C]Pyruvate (HP C) MRI studies as they improve SNR by refocusing the magnetization each TR. Currently, pharmacokinetic models used to fit conversion rate constants, k and k, and rate constant maps do not account for differences in the signal evolution of MS-bSSFP acquisitions.

Methods: In this work, a flexible MS-bSSFP model was built that can be used to fit conversion rate constants for these experiments.
