In the treatment of industrial wastewater by electron beam technology, the flocculation process was frequently coupled with electron beam radiation to improve the water quality to meet the discharge standard. Iron-containing coagulant was widely used in the flocculation process. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of residual iron-containing coagulants on pollutant degradation by the ionizing radiation process. Results showed that the absorbed dose required for complete removal of 50 mg/L bisphenol A decreased from 5 kGy to 2.5 kGy in the presence of 100 μM typical iron coagulant (FeCl). BPA degradation efficiency increased with the increase of FeCl dosage over a wide pH range (3.0-10.0), and the TOC removal efficiency increased from 20% to 45% with the addition of 300 μM Fe(III). The mechanistic investigation demonstrated that OH was the primary reactive species responsible for BPA degradation. The residual iron coagulants (FeCl) significantly enhanced the degradation and mineralization efficiency. Under suitable pH conditions (3.0-6.0), the reducing reactive species (e and H) could effectively reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), which then reacted with HO, thus inducing in-situ Fenton reaction to generate more OH, thus promoting the radiolysis degradation of micropollutants. This study explored the potential of using residual iron coagulants from the flocculation process to enhance the performance of electron beam technology for wastewater treatment.

Ferroptosis is a novel, iron-dependent form of non-apoptotic cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial shrinkage. It is closely associated with the onset and progression of various diseases, especially cancer, at all stages, making it a key focus of research for developing therapeutic strategies. Numerous studies have explored the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating ferroptosis by modulating the expression of critical genes involved in iron metabolism and lipid peroxidation.

Early and portable detection of pathogenic bacteria is crucial for ensuring food safety, monitoring product quality, and tracing the sources of bacterial infections. Moving beyond traditional plate-culture counting methods, the analysis of active bacterial components offers a rapid means of quantifying bacteria. Here, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDHs), synthesized via the Kirkendall effect, were employed as highly effective oxidase mimics to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Melatonin increases Pb tolerance in P. ovata seedlings via the regulation of growth and stress-related phytohormones, ROS scavenging and genes responsible for melatonin synthesis, metal chelation, and stress defense. Lead (Pb) is a highly toxic heavy metal that accumulates in plants through soil and air contamination and impairs its plant growth and development.

Iron plays a prominent role in various biological processes and is an essential element in almost all organisms, including plant-pathogenic fungi. As a transition element, iron occurs in two redox states, Fe and Fe, the transition between which generates distinct reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as HO, OH anions, and toxic OH· radicals. Thus, the redox status of Fe determines ROS formation in pathogen attack and plant defense and governs the outcome of pathogenic interactions.

Thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1) is an important therapeutic target for nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment due to its overexpression in NSCLC cells. In this work, to address the deficiency that sesquiterpene lactone containing α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety was rapidly metabolized by endogenous nucleophiles, series of novel thioether derivatives were designed and synthesized based on a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-triggered prodrug strategy. Among them, prodrug exhibited potent cytotoxicity against NSCLC cells and better release rates in response to ROS.
